Stop Biotech Companies from Gaining Unjust Legal Rights

Target: Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Matthias Groote

Goal: Stop the European Union from granting biotech companies the right to make decisions on genetically modified crop bans

Just as many European nations are making strides to ban genetically modified (GM) crops, large biotech companies such as Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow and DuPont are gaining ground in obtaining legal rights on GM bans. These companies are in the process of making negotiations with European Environmental Ministers. If the negotiations go through and this new law is passed, it will give biotech companies the power to decide whether or not a ban should be permitted, and it is obvious what they will choose.

Basically, the law is covered up as a GM ban throughout the EU. The catch? The people who decide whether or not a crop should be banned are the very ones who will profit from those crops. If a biotech company decides to say no to a ban, the government will have to use only non-scientific legal grounds to argue its case.

For years, governments have been fighting for their rights to ban these risky GM crops. “It is an affront to democracy that companies like Monsanto will be given legal status in any decision to ban their products. Governments must be able to ban unwanted and risky GM crops without needing the permission of the companies who profit from them,” said Adrian Bebb of Friends of the Earth Europe.

These large corporations should not have the legal right to decide whether or not GM crops should be banned, that should be the right of each individual government. The governments in the EU should uphold this basic right to protect their citizens and it is unjust for the large biotech companies to decide what food will be served to each nation’s citizens. Sign the petition below to urge members of the EU to put a stop to this law that is in the making.

Dear Chairman Groote,

For years, many European nations have been fighting for their right to ban and outlaw genetically modified (GM) crops and it is unfair to hinder their advances by giving biotech companies legal rights in the matter. The new law that the European Environmental Ministers are planning on implementing would put all the power in the large biotech companies’ hands and strip European nations of their rights.

Giving biotech companies the power to decide whether or not a ban should be implemented is unjust because they are the ones who would be receiving an enormous profit. It is obvious that they would not wish to ban their own products. Each nation and government should hold the right to outright ban GM crops based on health, scientific and legal grounds. It is the duty of each nation to protect its citizens and the passing of this law would inhibit them from doing so.

Please take immediate action and prevent this law from being passed. It is for the well-being of all European nations and it will set a strong example for the rest of the world to follow.
