Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Encourage the U.S. government to support-solar powered roadways
A new and innovative solution to the world’s energy problem is being tested and tried. This solution would replace the asphalt and concrete on our roadways and sidewalks with solar panels, generating energy and reducing our carbon footprint. Currently this idea is a prototype, but if implemented in our cities and roads, it would lower the United States’ energy cost exponentially.
These solar panels are made with tempered glass that can withstand high impact vehicles. It is also made from recycled materials and honey-combed shaped, allowing for quick repairs should a panel become damaged. The solar panels also come with a neat heating function for those that live in cold places. Driveways, sidewalks, and roads will no longer need to be shoveled, and salt wouldn’t have to be placed on the roads. Tax money wouldn’t be wasted on snow removal and our cars would last longer.
Each solar panel has LED lights and the lights can be programmed to change lanes, warn oncoming traffic about an accident, change parking configurations or warn drivers if an animal is crossing. It can also be used in parks, changing the floor configuration to basketball, hopscotch or hockey. Solar panel roadways also have cable corridors that run alongside the roads. One side holds the electrical cables, including power lines, phone lines, internet lines, and data lines. This will eliminate the need for telephone poles. The other side captures storm water and snow melt, which gets taken to a wastewater treatment plant, or gets treated onsite. Replacing our roads with these solar panels would open thousands of jobs for the American economy, and since the solar panels pay for themselves, the benefits are long term.
The technology for these panels were invented by engineering couple Julie and Scott Brushaw, and thanks to a grant by the Federal Highway Administration, they were able to test out their product in 2009. If you believe in this product and its environment benefits, sign this petition and tell President Obama that we want this to happen.
Dear President Obama,
Lately, the idea of solar-powered roadways is circling through social media and it’s causing a frenzy. These solar panels take in the sun’s rays and converts them into energy, giving the planet clean energy. These panels would reduce our carbon footprint and lessen our energy bills. It would also make our roads safer since drivers can be warned about accidents or animal crossings.
While the idea of this is still a prototype, the fact of the matter is this project has a lot of potential and could make our cities and air cleaner. I am writing to tell you that I want this idea to come to fruition. I want our roads to become energy generators and our air and environment to be cleaner.
