Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Strengthen mental health facilities and create new ones to prevent gun violence
With the recent shootings in Santa Barbara, California, Americans are asking what can be done to stop the violence and death. Proposed legislation for gun control is often shot down, as many Americans do not want to lose their right to bear arms. Instead, the United States should focus on its mental facilities. Many of the killers who go out and take the lives of innocent civilians have mental health problems, and to curb the violence and destruction, the country needs to support mental health facilities.
Twenty-two-year-old Elliot Rodger was behind the recent attacks at the University of Santa Barbara, where envy, hatred and rage fueled his attacks. Seven people were killed, including the gunman. He left a 107,000-word manifesto that described his “twisted world.” Believing that he was a nice guy, he felt entitled to have a woman, but because he was rejected, that hurt added to his fury. Rodger then decided to target the most popular fraternity in Santa Barbara, where he killed six people.
As authorities poured over evidence, many are concluding that this man was mentally ill. Rodger called the day of the shooting the Day of Retribution, and there were other disturbing habits and thoughts that filled the manifesto. When he first bought his handgun, he realized that he was planning a massacre, and taking his life in the process. He also planned to stab his two male roommates because he found them annoying. Rodgers then intended to lure people into his apartment and torture them, hurting those who had the most sexual pleasure the most.
Passing gun control legislation has always been difficult; however, the violence can be curbed if the nation would support and strengthen mental health facilities. In the United States there is a stigma against mental illnesses, but this stigma prevents many from seeking help. There is no doubt that these shooters are mentally ill and perhaps if they sought help, these deaths could be avoided.
If you believe that supporting mental health facilities could lessen the number of massive shootings in the United States, please sign this petition.
Dear President Barack Obama,
The frequency in which mass shootings are occurring in the United States points to a deep and dark problem. While I understand that your administration tried to curb gun violence by passing stricter regulations, these proposals were mostly struck down or weren’t strong enough to initiate change. I am proposing another solution in the hopes of curbing gun violence.
I am writing to urge your administration to strengthen our mental facilities. Those who intentionally go out to purchase weapons for the sole purpose of taking a person’s life are mentally ill. If these people sought help, many innocent people wouldn’t have lost their lives. Families wouldn’t have to suffer. Please do something to stop more innocent lives from being taken.
