Stop Cruel and Senseless Bear Hunt

Target: David Orazietti, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources

Goal: Reverse the inhumane decision to reinstate an annual spring bear cull

Ontario, Canada recently voted to reinstate its annual spring bear hunt, lifting a ban that had been in place since 1999. The cull will result in the deaths of thousands of bears, simply because their population has grown healthy enough to expand their range to the southern portions of the province. This ruling must be reversed immediately so the bear population of Canada can remain protected.

The decision to lift the hunting ban was based on complaints from residents, who believe there have recently been more human-bear encounters. Animal rights groups, including Animal Alliance of Canada and Zoocheck Canada, made a case for preventing the hunt, arguing that it violates animal cruelty laws and emphasizing the orphaned cubs who will die of starvation or be killed by predators. These arguments were ultimately dismissed by a judge.

Ontario’s natural resources minister says he is pleased with the decision. Those in favor continue to assert the necessity of the hunt by insisting it protects public safety. This argument, however, doesn’t hold water. Since the year 2000 there have only been 15 fatal bear attacks in Canada, and only 27 total in North America. Compare this to the 26 people that are killed by dogs each year in North America and the 90 people that are killed by lightening. Nobody is calling for a dog hunt. There is absolutely no reason that thousands of bears have to die because of a dozen attacks. They pose no threat to society.

The true purpose of the hunt becomes clear on websites such as “Ontario Black Bear Heaven,” a website dedicated to emphasizing the pleasures of killing black bears. The site tells hunters where and when they can bag the biggest bear, and tries to impose a kind of paranoia on the viewer by focusing on how significant a threat bears are to humans. The statistics tell a different story. The fact of the matter is that nature does not need human intervention to achieve harmony, and the bear population should be left to wax and wane on its own before protecting them becomes a necessity once again.

Please take a moment to sign the petition below and demand that the Ontario spring bear hunt be banned once again.

Dear Minister Orazietti,

You recently decided to reinstate the spring bear hunt in Ontario. This is a tragic decision that is without necessity. The black bear population in Ontario poses no real threat to public safety. There have only been 15 fatal bear attacks in all of Canada since 2000. More people have been killed because of dogs, yet nobody is complaining that dogs should be hunted.

Thousands of bears should not have to die just to satisfy big game hunters or to “balance” things out again. Nature does not need our help. Please reverse this legislation immediately and keep black bears in Ontario protected before their population plummets once again.

  1. People seem to have some sick need to kill every last beautiful animal on earth until there’s none left.

  2. Elizabeth Bona says:

I’m sick of Canada, all they do is hunt and slaughter.

  3. Stan Benton says:

Certainly no decent human being would take pride in obtaining a “trophy” by murdering a defenseless animal.

  4. Catherine Hughes-Hole says:

Hunting=cruelty! How di you sleep @night?

  5. It is worrisome that so many have no compassion and respect for bears and other wildlife! If they are out there, they should be killed! That’s the mindset for hunters and many in responsible agencies! Stricter laws and punishment are necessary in order to lessen the thrill of the kill!!!

  6. Are the inhabitants of Canada got off their senses?
What is this? to encourage people to go out and kill bears for fun?
I beg you, stop this encouraging to slaugheter tousands of bears for no reason.
This promoted massacre put the reputation on the bottom of decency , making Canada to be populated of people with no respect for nature, its habitants and human decency.
Be a people of modern age, not fall back and behind mediaval ages.
Respect for animals makes a country worth admiring, be on!!!

    • Helga it isn’t the people of Canada but the ones running the show and some that have something to gain from all the slaughter. These people are in the same boat as everyone else in the world, that are trying to stop the slaughter and destruction. How many of us in our own states have signed petitions, to try and stop an injustice? Did the politicians and those calling the shots listen? What happen when the BSL (breed specific law ) happened? Did these fools listen, hell no. It is an epidemic of indifference and cruelty. The only thing that is going to change this all is to get poor animal and pro planet people into office and in charge of specific jobs.Other wise they aren’t going to stop.

  7. caryl Sawyer says:

Cancelled family reunion in Canada. Have too many relatives who look like bears.

  8. Jane Morrow says:

Anyone who hunts, traps or kills animals is a low life piece of soleless flotsam. The real problem is people are encroaching on the habitats of animals. If there are too many people why not hunt them – that’s less offensive to me. The more I discover about the mindset of a lot of people in North America and how certain groups lobby and control decisions regarding animals and the environment, the more disheartened I become. I’m glad I live in New Zealand. However, I will still do whatever I can through donations and petitions to help the organisations that try and put a stop to this madness.

  9. laisser vivre ces animaux en toutes quiétudes et ne pas en faire une pratique habituelle

  10. Camille Jordan says:

All wildlife should be left alone!! Its sickening. to me how some hunters just wAnt a trophy!!!??? Maybe they should b hunted down!

  11. Mandy-Lou Dumesny-Blahut says:

Humans are horrid beasts. We need to cull
