Thank Group for Protecting Rare Trees from Poaching

CA redwood tree

Target: Sam Hodder, President and CEO of the Save the Redwoods League

Goal: Ensure that ancient California redwood trees are protected from poachers

In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the poaching of old-growth California redwood trees. In response to the attacks, Save the Redwoods League, along with Redwoods Parks Association, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of poachers. Redwood burls, dormant buds that develop as large bulbs on the tree trunks close to the ground, are highly prized for their elaborate patterns. Burls are essential to new growth and the trees’ ultimate survival, yet they are being cut off by poachers who fetch thousands of dollars for them. Thank Sam Hodder, President and CEO of Save the Redwoods League, for his group’s efforts to save these ancient, magnificent redwoods.

Commercial logging has decimated California’s old-growth forest and less than five percent of the ancient redwoods remain as part of the landscape. Illegal poaching takes place within the state and national parks of northern California, which are legally protected areas. The poaching has devastating effects on both the redwoods and the many animals that depend on them for survival, including threatened and endangered species. Burl poaching is usually completed using chain saws, which compromise the integrity of the trees, create entryways for pathogens and insects, and exposes them to risk of fire damage. Burls act as the primary tools for tree regeneration, so their removal has long-term impacts on tree survival.

Show your support for these majestic trees. Thank Save the Redwoods League for its continued efforts to ensure that the redwoods remain for centuries to come.

Dear President Hodder,

I have recently learned of your efforts to save California redwoods. I applaud your group’s decision to offer a financial reward for information leading to the prosecution of poachers, and I believe this will make a difference.

The ancient redwoods are a magnificent part of our landscape and we should take measures to ensure that they continue to thrive for centuries to come. As you know, the illegal poaching of redwood burls has devastating effects on both the redwoods and the many animals that depend on them for survival, including threatened and endangered species. We should do everything possible to stop the attacks on these living beings.

Your organization’s proactive solutions will help ensure that the redwoods continue to thrive. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this important cause.

First , these ignorant, greedy cowboys want to wipe all the wolves off the face of this country, then the bison, then the wild horses, the coyotes, the prairie dogs, the foxes, the squirrels, the bees and butterflies, and more. Now, they are destroying our magnificent Redwoods for time immemorial. What a bitter, insentient world we live in! The tragedy is beyond belief for persons like myself could never put a price on Nature.
