Target: José Rosendo Campos Barrientos, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Peru’s University of Engineering and Technology
Goal: Praise university for creating a billboard that purifies polluted city air
Earth’s biggest cities are plagued by air pollution. Automobile exhaust, factory smokestack emissions and toxic particles kicked up by construction all combine to make the air unhealthy to breathe, the effects of which can be anything from minor irritation to death. Air pollution is a serious global problem demanding innovative solutions. Peru’s University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) has created just such a solution with its development of a billboard that can purify heavily polluted air.
UTEC is a recently-established Peruvian university dedicated to training students to create innovative technologies to make the world a better place. The biggest city in Peru is Lima, which, according to a recent World Health Organization report, is the most polluted city in all of Latin America. One estimate states that since 2007 over 5,000 Peruvians have died as a result of air pollution. In response to Lima’s air pollution problem a research team at UTEC created a billboard that absorbs polluted air, filters out bacteria and toxic particles and releases it as fresh oxygen similar to what trees do with carbon dioxide. Just one of these billboards can reportedly purify the air “as effectively as 1,200 trees.”
If these billboards can help reduce air pollution in Lima it is likely they will soon be put to use in major cities throughout the world. Seeing as billboards are a regular part of the urban landscape, UTEC’s innovative creation could make a significant impact on the air we breathe. Let the UTEC research team know that you appreciate their efforts to improve urban air quality.
Dear Professor Barrientos,
I was happy to read about UTEC’s recent innovation of an urban billboard that absorbs polluted city air, filters out toxic bacteria and particles and then releases fresh oxygen back into the air. Air pollution is a global problem, especially in major cities. People can suffer serious consequences from breathing toxic air on a regular basis. Polluted air has been known to cause cancer and it can seriously aggravate existing heart and lung problems, causing death in many instances.
Seeing as air pollution is such a serious problem it is inspiring to see institutions like yours create such innovative solutions. Your billboard will help purify the air in Lima, and your innovation will stimulate others to create similarly beneficial designs. The engineering department at UTEC has my sincere thanks for all its efforts to improve urban air quality.
