Target: Joe Biden, President of the Senate, Patrick Leahy, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, John Boehner, Speaker of the House of Representatives
Goal: Tighten the regulations concerning clean air markets and create a dedicated task force to implement and enforce these rules
No one reading this petition would survive without clean air to breathe. If this is a generally accepted fact, then why aren’t there stricter rules and regulations in place to govern the amount of pollution that is put into our atmosphere every single day?
There are a number of market-based regulatory programs in effect that are designed to improve air quality and limit the amount of toxins that are released into the environment. However, these fall short on several levels. First, they only focus on airborne particulates, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury. While these are detrimental to human health, these programs completely disregard the astonishing amount of carbon dioxide that is being poured into the atmosphere every single day, which totals nearly 1000 tons every single second.
Additionally, these so-called regulatory programs are all based within the markets that they are supposed to be regulating. Not only does this create a conflict of interest, but it does absolutely nothing to encourage these companies to actually regulate the amount of toxins and particulates that are actually being released. There is no accountability and little to no oversight when it comes to enforcement.
Only by holding these big factories and their parent companies accountable for their actions can we hope to make a change. Ask Congress to tighten the regulations concerning clean air markets and to create a dedicated task force to enforce these new rules.
Dear Joe Biden, Patrick Leahy, and John Boehner,
The air we breathe is one of our most precious resources. In spite of this fact, it is constantly being filled with toxic particulates, heavy metals, and carbon dioxide. All of the current regulations concerning clean air markets exist only within the markets where such regulations would be needed. With no outside oversight or accountability, how can we be sure that these companies are doing the right thing?
We ask that you exercise your power to tighten the regulations concerning clean air markets. In addition, we ask for the creation of an independent department or task force that is designed specifically to hold these large companies properly accountable for their actions. Taking these steps is a great way to ensure that our children and our children’s children will be able to walk out of their homes and breathe freely, without fear of airborne toxins, for many years to come.
