Create Resource Detailing Restaurants’ Sourcing of Animal Products

Goal: Call on the Humane Society to create a searchable online database which shows how animals in a restaurant’s supply line are treated

Look at your hamburger or your steak the next time you go to a restaurant. Do you know where that meat came from? Even if you can find a listing of suppliers for a given restaurant in an online search it could take hours of research to discover whether the animals in these supply lines are treated humanely.

Are the pigs for your morning bacon bred in tortuously confining gestation crates? Are the cows that make up your hamburger forced by the thousands into filthy feedlots to spend their final days standing in their own waste and breathing noxious fumes? What about that chicken sandwich you picked up from the local fast food place? Modern chickens are bred to grow and put on weight so quickly that many of them are completely immobile in a matter of weeks. Would you be able to find any of this out just by looking at that sandwich on your tray? If you knew that your favorite restaurant was mistreating the animals that were being served, would you still want to eat there?

Call on the Humane Society, a leading animal rights organization, to create a comprehensive resource that brings all of this information into one place. Consumers have the right to know how the animals in these supply lines are being treated so they can make informed choices about where to purchase their food.


Dear Mr. Pacelle,

As CEO of the Humane Society it is part of your job to fight for animal rights and to inform the public when these rights are being abused. It is becoming harder and harder for the consumer to find supply line information on his or her own: either the information isn’t being shared or else it is being deliberately hidden to prevent people from learning precisely where their food comes from.

This is where you can help to make a change. I ask that you use the resources available to you to create a comprehensive database of food suppliers, restaurants and food companies including their supply lines. An online, searchable database would give consumers a place to research companies and make more informed decisions on which companies to support, and which to avoid. While creating such an exhaustive resource would certainly cost both time and money, such a valuable project could also inspire major donors to help fund it.

A database like this will not only help to inform the consumer; it will also force companies to become accountable for their actions and will encourage those that still employ inhumane tactics to change their ways. This could be a great step toward creating truly humane animal supply lines. Please, help make it a reality.
