Save Grizzly Bears from Extinction

Grizzly Bears

Target: Canada Federal Environmental Minister, Peter Kent

Goal: Demand Canadian grizzly bears be protected from extinction

The number of grizzly bears in Canada has dramatically decreased over the last 10 years, but no steps have been taken by the Canadian government to protect them. A recent study found that many grizzly bear populations are now on the verge of extinction. Demand the Canadian government legally list and protect grizzly bears to prevent them from becoming extinct.

A recent study found that 16 subgroups of grizzly bears are nearing extinction in regions that were once well-populated. Similarly, a panel of scientists specializing in endangered wildlife formally declared grizzly bears as a “special concern” that should be legally listed under the Species at Risk Act to ensure special protection. Wildlife advisors for the federal government have strongly recommended legally listing and protecting grizzly bears twice in the past 10 years, but the government has failed to act.

Southern populations of grizzly bears are most at risk as a result of shrinking habitats from increased oil and gas development and general destruction, as well as death from excessive human intervention like sport hunting, control kills, poaching and overfishing the food that the bears need to survive. Low reproductive rates and climate change have also made an impact. Experts have declared grizzly bears as the most vulnerable large mammal on the continent. Sign this petition to urge Canada’s federal environmental minister to take immediate conservation measures and legally list and protect grizzly bears before they become extinct.

Dear Federal Environmental Minister Kent,

Over the last 10 years, grizzly bear populations in Canada have dropped dramatically and are currently nearing extinction. Despite two recommendations from the federal government’s wildlife advisory panel, grizzly bears are still not legally listed or protected. I urge you to take immediate action and list grizzly bears under the federal Species at Risk Act before it is too late.

A recent study by the David Suzuki Foundation found that 16 subgroups of grizzly bears are nearing extinction, and a panel of expert scientists from the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada declared the species as a “special concern.” Destruction of habitats due to increased oil and gas development, death from human intervention like sport hunting, control kills, poaching and overfishing, climate change and low reproductive rates have all contributed to the drop in grizzly bear populations and must be immediately addressed to ensure this species doesn’t disappear forever.

I demand immediate conservation measures be taken, and urge you to list grizzly bears under the federal Species at Risk Act to prevent them from becoming extinct in Canada.
