Target: Basia Irland
Goal: Praise artist for her recent ice book project, which helps promote the protection of rivers worldwide
Rivers are some of our most precious global resources and we must do everything we can to nurture and protect them. Basia Irland is an artist and an activist and her Ice Receding/Books Reseeding project, as stated on her website the project, “emphasizes the necessity of communal effort and scientific knowledge to deal with the complex issues of climate disruption and watershed restoration.” Basia needs to praised for raising global awareness about our rivers while healing them at the same time.
For her Ice Receding/Books Reseeding project, Basia freezes river water then carves it into the shape of a large tome, which she fills with a unique “riparian text” of indigenous plant seeds. She then puts the ice book back into the river. As the book melts, the seeds contained within are released into the water and eventually take root on the riverbanks and grow and help restore the local watershed. Plants are essential to a river’s health—they help prevent erosion by holding riverbanks together with their root systems, filter dangerous pollutants and contaminants, and provide food and shelter for various animals.
Basia works to ensure that each “book launch” is also an awareness-raising communal affair. She works with local scientists to find the best seeds for each “riparian text” and she invites local activists, students, and other citizens to every launching. She teaches these individuals about the importance of their river and she urges them to continue to care for it once she moves on. She even gives them seeds they can plant in order to continue to heal their river’s watershed.
Basia has gifted ice books to rivers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. She has raised awareness about the importance of our rivers and the dangers they face. She has educated people and encouraged them to care for their local rivers. Please sign the petition below to let Basia know how much you appreciate her artistic endeavors.
Dear Basia Irland,
I just learned about your recent Ice Receding/Books Reseeding project and wanted to write and tell you how much I appreciate your work. Rivers are some of our most precious global resources and we must do everything we can to protect and nurture them. Your ice book project helps river watersheds throughout the world by restoring their indigenous plants. The project also involves each river’s community members who are encouraged to continue your work once you move on to a new river. The ice books themselves are very beautiful and do much to draw attention to the importance of the health of our rivers.
Thank you for raising global awareness about our rivers while healing them at the same time. I appreciate your commitment and your artistry, and hope that you continue creating your environmentally friendly and inspiring works.
