Target: Groupon CEO, Eric Lefkofsky
Goal: Stop promoting cruel animal shows
Groupon, the daily deal website that offers discounts on hundreds of activities, is offering deals on cruel animal shows. Companies such as the notorious SeaWorld and Ringling Bros. are featured on Groupon’s website. Even further, nearly every animal circus offered by Groupon has been cited for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Sign this petition to put pressure on Groupon to cease promoting these cruel shows, and reserve discounts for worthy events.
Even PETA has become involved with Groupon, calling for it to break its ties with these companies, most of whom have a history of animal rights abuses, including endangering the public and animals, failing to afford adequate veterinary care to the animals, and handling animals in a dangerous manner. Some of the many companies promoted by Groupon include SeaWorld, Ringling Bros., UniverSoul Circus, and G.W. Exotic, which is presently under federal investigation after 23 tigers died at its roadside zoo.
We cannot let animal shows be promoted to an unsuspecting public in this way. Groupon must stop promoting companies with such terrible animal abuse records. Several other deal websites have made agreements to stop promoting animal shows on their websites – it is time that Groupon did the same. Sign this petition to stop a major deal website from exacerbating the issue of cruel animal performances, and ask the company to follow in other deal websites’ footsteps.
Dear Mr. Lefkofsky,
I am appalled to read of Groupon’s promotion of cruel animal performances as part of its deals. Almost every one of the circus deals you offer have been cited for transgressions of the Animal Welfare Act; one circus company is currently under federal investigation for the deaths of 23 tigers, and SeaWorld and Ringling Bros. have both recently received extremely negative worldwide press – potentially devastating for your company.
I ask that you withdraw all affiliation with animal performance companies, and stop offering deals for them on your website.
Major companies such as Visa, MasterCard, Sears, Ford, General Mills, and other online deal sites such as Gilt Groupe, Travelzoo, and Certifikid have all agreed to leave animal performance out of their promotions. I now ask that Groupon does the same.
Not only will the negative press that these animal shows receive affect Groupon, but you are also responsible for the continuation of animal cruelty. Your deals help enable these companies to remain in existence. For your sake and for the animals who suffer deeply at the hands of their masters, please stop all animal-related promotion on Groupon.
