Praise Soccer Star for Promoting Vegetarianism

Target: Phil Neville

Goal: Praise soccer great Phil Neville for recently adopting and promoting vegetarianism

In a recent interview with PETA U.K., soccer great Phil Neville explained that he adopted a plant-based diet because it was healthier than a meat-based diet and because it caused far less devastation to animals. He needs to be praised for using his fame to promote and encourage this healthier, more animal-friendly diet.

Phil Neville starred in the U.K.’s Premier League for 18 years, splitting his time between clubs Manchester United and Everton. During his stellar soccer career he won six league titles and earned numerous accolades from players and fans alike. In his recent interview with PETA U.K., he used his fame to promote vegetarianism. He explained that he’d had doubts that a plant-based diet could provide one with the protein and nutrients needed to perform as a high-level professional athlete. But his wife, already a vegetarian, convinced Phil to give the diet a chance for a few weeks. He did and, as he stated in the interview, he started to feel “healthier, leaner,” he started to “feel great!”

In addition to explaining that athletes can derive all the nutrition they need from foods like soy and nuts and other plants, Phil, in the interview, also explained the beneficial impact worldwide plant-based diets could have on animals. He said “2.5 million animals a day are being slaughtered” for the sake of meat-based diets, a “damning statistic” that cannot be ignored by a humane citizenry. He encouraged people to give vegetarianism a try, arguing that if “everyone can even just do one day of not eating meat” then the world will be a better place.

Dear Mr. Neville,

I was heartened to see your recent interview with PETA U.K. in which you explained why you adopted a vegetarian diet. In the interview, you explained how plant-based diets are healthier than meat-based diets and that if more people adopted vegetarianism millions of animals would be saved from being slaughtered each day for food. You also explained that people can derive enough protein and nutrients from plant-based diets to perform as high-level professional athletes.

If more people adopted a vegetarian lifestyle the world would be a healthier place and there would be far less animal suffering than there is right now. Thank you for taking the time to use your fame as a professional athlete to publicly promote vegetarianism.

  1. Well, I was a vegetarian when I was a little boy. However; I went back to vegetarian,–after I watched lots of videos of factory-farms that are being investigated by animal rights teams.
I’ll keep going with a vegetarian diet.
