Target: Vermont Governor, Peter Shumlin
Goal: Applaud new requirement for genetically engineered foods to be labeled in Vermont
On May 8, 2014 a bill was passed in Vermont that marks a grand step towards food safety in the United States. The landmark bill means that all genetically engineered food produced in Vermont will have to be labeled by 2016. The bill is a great victory for food safety activists, who argue that GMO foods can be harmful to health; this bill will give people a clear indication of what substances are in the foods they are purchasing. Sign this petition to thank Mr. Shumlin for signing this law into action.
Although this bill is the first that will require immediate action from Vermont’s food producers, it is not the first bill of its kind to be signed. Connecticut and Maine have both passed GMO labeling legislation, but with caveats: Connecticut’s law will not take effect until four more states totaling 20 million people pass similar bills, and Maine’s legislation requires that five neighboring states pass food labeling laws similar to theirs. Vermont’s new bill has no stipulations, and will go into action immediately, hopefully triggering a series of food labeling laws in other states.
The step is extremely positive, and not an isolated incident. Thirty-two food labeling bills have been reintroduced so far in 2014 in various states, signifying a huge shift in opinion and respecting people’s rights to know what is in their food.
Sign this petition to thank Governor Shumlin for signing this law into being and encourage Vermont to continue working against the giants of agriculture and GMO manufacturers.
Dear Mr. Shumlin,
I write with thanks after reading of your signing of a GMO food labeling bill in Vermont. This is the first bill of its kind to come with no clauses, unlike the bills in Connecticut and Maine, which both require other states to enact their own laws before coming into effect.
After similar bills in California and Washington both failed in previous years, this is a welcome result in the campaign against GMO manufacturers. Indeed, the fact that 32 labeling laws have been reintroduced in various states this year means that awareness and momentum are beginning to shift.
Thank you for signing this crucial law into being. I sincerely hope that it is the trigger for more states to follow Vermont’s example and fight against giant corporations who fill our food with harmful substances. Please continue this good work and inspire other states to do what you have done in Vermont.
