Thank Disney for Honoring Slain Conservation Hero

Target: Bob Iger, Disney CEO

Goal: Thank Disney for honoring Jairo Mora-Sandoval, a conservation hero who lost his life in the defense of leatherback sea turtles and their nests in Costa Rica

Between February and July of each year female leatherback sea turtles return to land–often the same beach where they were hatched–to lay their eggs.  These stunning creatures lay dozens of eggs and bury them in the wet sand before returning to sea. Months later the newly hatched turtles follow the moon’s light to make their way to the water.

While on land the females and hatchlings are vulnerable to predators and worse, to poachers. The turtles are often slain for their meat, and the eggs are dug up and sold on the black market. Thankfully there are conservationists who make it their mission to stand between these defenseless turtles and those who see them only as a source of profit.

In March, 2013 one of these conservation heroes lost his life in defense of endangered turtles. Jairo Mora-Sandoval worked for the conservation program WIDECAST, which was created solely to ensure the conservation of the various species of sea turtles that make their nests along the pristine Costa Rican coastline. Jairo was kidnapped from the beach, and while we have few details as to what happened next his body was found on the same beach the next morning.

It’s heroes like Jairo who will make sure that our environment is preserved for future generations to enjoy and cherish. Even if it costs them their lives, these amazing men and women put themselves between the world’s most delicate ecosystems and those who would plunder them.

In April of 2014 Jairo was one of 14 recipients of the Disney Conservation Hero award, presented posthumously to his family members. Jairo’s heroic sacrifice for these stunning sea turtles is symbolic of the commitment of conservationists everywhere to safeguarding our planet’s precious ecosystems. Thank Disney for ensuring that his sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Dear Mr. Igen,

In March of 2013 a young conservationist named Jairo Mora-Sandoval lost his life in defense of the leatherback sea turtles that make their nests on the sparkling beaches of Costa Rica. He was kidnapped and killed for preventing poachers from plundering the nests of eggs laid only weeks before.

Thank you for recognizing the hard work and ultimate sacrifice of this young hero with the posthumous presentation of the Disney Conservation Hero award. You have helped bring to light the hard and sometimes brutal work that conservationists around the world do every single day while raising awareness about the many challenges facing sea turtles. As long as his work continues then his sacrifice will not have been in vain.
