Target: President Obama
Goal: Praise President Obama for promoting awareness of climate change through meteorologists
The issue of climate change does not seem to be a high priority for many Americans. A recent poll found that the issue is ranked 19th out of 20 for Americans, and the Obama Administration is trying desperately to make the public care. By enlisting the help of weather forecasters, the administration is hoping discussion of this topic will convince the American public of the dangers and consequences of climate change.
On May 6, President Obama invited eight weather forecasters to the White House to discuss climate change. Those that were invited were Jim Gandy from Columbia, South Carolina, Al Roker from the “Today Show” and other local weather forecasters from cities like Seattle, Miami, and Chicago. The guests were handpicked by the administration in the hopes of spreading information detailed in the new National Climate Assessment where the White House announced that the consequences of climate change were happening right now. Previously, the notion was that climate change would happen far in the future.
Polls found that television forecasters were one of the most trusted media figures, but a deep divide exists on the topic of climate change. Some do not believe that human activities are the culprit of climate change, while others do. What is also surprising is that 18 percent of American weather forecasters believe that human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, contribute to global warming. The forecasters that were brought to the White House believe that there is a link and will prepare broadcasts to include information about climate change with the help of Climate Central. This nonprofit group creates graphics to help explain and display the impact of climate change on the local community.
The Obama administration should be commended for its efforts. With the recent drought in California and the heavy rains in Florida, the impact of climate change can already be seen. It is crucial that the American public realize how much impact their activities have on the planet. Sign this petition and praise the Obama administration for this initiative.
Dear President Obama,
Your administration recently invited prominent weather forecasters to the White House to discuss climate change. These forecasters will be incorporating the effects of climate change into their forecasts in an effort to convince the public of its existence. Unfortunately, there are many who do not believe that there is a link between their everyday actions and climate change, even though there is serious evidence of its impact.
I am writing to commend your administration for getting the word out. California farmers are suffering because of a recent drought, one that has lasted almost three years. Florida is receiving heavy rainfall that was unlike any storm the state has ever seen. The public needs to realize that climate change is a serious concern. Again, I want to thank you for your efforts and I hope the public will realize the damage they are causing to our planet.
