Target: Senator Mary Landrieu
Goal: Tell Senator Landrieu to stop using Ukraine instability to promote Keystone XL pipeline
Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, a long-time proponent of the Keystone XL pipeline, has begun citing the instability in the Ukraine as a reason that the environmentally disastrous Keystone XL pipeline should move forward. As head of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Landrieu has been a key ally of big oil interests. Using the situation in the Ukraine as a reason for allowing the pipeline to move forward is an example of fear mongering at its worst. Senator Landrieu is trying to scare the American public into allowing the Keystone XL pipeline to move forward despite the serious dangers the project poses to the environment. Please take action to tell Senator Landrieu to quit using fear as a tool to promote her environmentally destructive agenda.
The Keystone XL pipeline threatens to facilitate the transfer of Canada’s dirty tar sand oil to the Gulf of Mexico. As the planet stands at the tipping point of irreversible consequences of global warming, we cannot afford to allow this project to further accelerate the rate of global warming. This pipeline would have no economic value to the average American, but would ensure serious consequences to the environment via increased global warming and potential oil spills along the pipeline.
Senator Landrieu is attempting to satisfy her friends in big oil by force-feeding the Keystone XL pipeline to the American people by any means necessary. By using the fear of instability in the Ukraine as a tool to further her agenda, she crosses the line into fear mongering. Please sign this petition to tell Senator Landrieu to stop trying to scare the American people into sacrificing the environment to further line the pockets of her friends in the oil industry.
Dear Senator Landrieu,
I recently learned of the comments you made regarding how the instability in the Ukraine should convince the American people that the Keystone XL pipeline is a good idea. You stated, “Americans look at what’s happening in Russia and Ukraine—I think it sends shivers up their spine and it should.”
Frankly, I’m deeply upset by your use of fear to try and convince the American people to agree to an oil pipeline that would have no economic benefit, but great environmental costs. It is a critical time for our planet, and we must reduce greenhouse emissions as soon as possible.
President Obama is doing his best to achieve these greenhouse gas reductions, but allies of big oil such as yourself are doing their best to undermine him. Please stop using scare tactics to try and push the environmentally destructive Keystone XL project in order to increase profits for your friends in the oil industry.
