Target: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver
Goal: Thank the Commissioner and the NBA for banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling in the wake of his disgusting racist remarks
A recording between Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers basketball franchise, and a female friend was recently released by the TMZ gossip and news network. The clip, which was later confirmed by both the female friend and Sterling’s estate, is full of his racist remarks. Allegedly he became annoyed after the young woman posed with Basketball Hall of Fame member Magic Johnson. Sterling stated that she could “sleep with black people, bring them in, do whatever you want,” but asked her not to bring black people to his basketball games.
Public backlash was immediate. The very next day team players and coaches held a meeting to discuss the comments and almost all parties were outraged. They even debated boycotting their next playoff game, but ultimately decided against it. Instead the players turned their jerseys inside out to protest Sterling’s despicable remarks. Celebrities, sports stars, and politicians alike have all spoken out against his actions. Many of the charities and projects that he helped fund have returned most or all of the money, and have said that they will no longer accept donations from him.
Four days after the tape was released NBA commissioner Adam Silver made the decision to ban Mr. Sterling from the league for life. This means that he is not allowed to attend any NBA games, enter any Clippers facilities, or make any business decisions regarding the team. The Commissioner also imposed a fine of $2.5 million, which will be donated to various anti-racism and tolerance groups.
Commissioner Silver’s actions are to be applauded. In a world where racism is constantly ignored we need people to step up and say that it is not and will never be acceptable. Show Silver and the rest of the NBA that his tough stance on intolerance represents the views of the vast majority of fans, players, coaches and owners, and that we stand behind him.
Dear Commissioner Silver,
I applaud your recent decision to ban LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling over his racist remarks. Instead of letting them slide you chose to stand up and let Mr. Sterling and the world know that racism is not, and will never be, acceptable in the NBA or in society as a whole.
The NBA includes players of diverse backgrounds, and basketball fans of all races and ethnicities support teams like the LA Clippers. Learning of Mr. Sterling’s disturbing beliefs has been more than disappointing. His racist rant suggests deeply-rooted prejudices that have no place in any professional sports league. Thank you for being the type of principled citizen that we should all hope to be, and know that we stand with you in support.
