Stop Uganda from Criminalizing LGBT-Friendly Nonprofits

Target: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni

Goal: Reject the proposal making it legal to charge LGBT-friendly nonprofits with criminal conduct

Uganda recently passed a bill making it illegal to be homosexual. Now, it appears the government is cracking down even further by planning to make it illegal for nonprofits to support LGBT individuals. The proposed law, which is currently being drafted for parliamentary debate, will make it so any involvement in politics is considered criminal activity. It is a strategic move for the 2016 elections: President Museveni can arrest anyone who speaks out against him while also crushing “very bad behavior like homosexuality.” The Ugandan people are seeing their rights disappearing by the day. Sign the petition and stop President Museveni from signing this into law.

The Ugandan government has slowly been tightening its grip on the public. In February, it issued the anti-homosexuality act. A similar bill passed made short skirts a crime (because of “public decency” and the “anti-pornography legislation”). New legislation declares that if a group of more than three people wish to discuss politics, they must receive a license from the police chief or they risk being arrested.

President Museveni, who has been in office since 1986, will go to any length to keep his hold on the country. The one pocket he received pushback in was the nonprofit community especially since a number are run through organizations from other countries. Nonprofits have said the president running in the 2016 elections only guarantees another election full of fraud and vote buying. To crush these voice, the bill being drafted will silence the non-profits under the cover of exposing LGBT-friendly groups. He’ll have his election, and the people will have even less resources in terms of sexual health or escaping sexual violence.

The Ugandan government is corrupt. Its president signs law after law taking away rights and resources from the public—the people he supposedly serves. President Museveni is determined to silence every possible voice that dares say anything against him or his policies. Sign this petition to tell the Ugandan president you do not support his actions or the proposed bill criminalizing LGBT-friendly nonprofits.

Dear President Museveni,

I learned about the bill being drafted concerning LGBT-friendly non-profits (or, “non-governmental organizations”). You recently passed an anti-homosexuality law in February and are now looking to stamp out any sign of support shown to people in regards to sexual health or sexual violence. This alone is a terrible decision, but there is also the clear ulterior motive in place: your desire to keep hold of your power.

This new law criminalizing LGBT-friendly nonprofits will not only restrict their actions regarding sexual health, but it will also make it illegal for these groups to speak out against you politically. What you are doing is selfish and wrong. You have elevated your own status, desires, and beliefs above the needs of the public, the people you were elected to serve. It is time to act like a leader, not a dictator.
