Reduce Negative Impacts of Obama’s Education Reforms

Target: U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
Goal: Reduce the negative impacts of the “Race to the Top” program on teachers and students

While there was supposedly good intent behind Obama’s Race to the Top program, parents and teachers are joining together in opposition. The program puts the nation’s education system under a lot of stress due to its focus on mandated standardized testing, and respected research already suggests that Race to the Top will not improve the quality of the nation’s education.

Since teachers are now evaluated by how their students perform on standardized tests curriculum has narrowed because teachers are simply teach to the tests. It is not fair to the teachers to be subjected to this sort of competition and it is definitely not fair to the students in the long run. Many teachers feel stressed and burdened because of the unfair link between test scores and wages and feel as if they are being bullied by the federal government.

Federal control of classrooms and education needs to be reduced. These generations of students deserve to be taught things that are necessary in life. With reductions in curriculum comes the reduction of lessons on art, music, science and even physical education. These are basic lessons that students need to have and it is not right for the government to deny them just to prioritize testing.

The federal government’s approach to education is not helping improve learning for American children. Sign the petition below to urge the U.S. Secretary of Education to abandon flawed policies like Race to the Top.

Dear U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan,

The education of our nation’s youth is something that should be continually fostered in order to create a generation of well-rounded and intelligent future leaders. In order to do this curriculum in schools should focus on necessary lessons across disciplines that prepare students for higher learning and not just for the mandated standardized tests.

The Race to the Top program has greatly limited the variety of lessons in the classroom. Teachers are too stressed and burdened by test preparation to teach necessary lessons to students such as art, science, music, and physical education. The federal government should take the focus off of standardized testing in order to allow students to grow and prosper.

Please reduce the emphasis on testing and eliminate the ties between wages and test scores for teachers included in the Race to the Top program. It is not right and highly unfair to the hard-working educators who are trying their best to teach future generations. And perhaps most importantly, it doesn’t improve the quality of education for the nation’s students.
