Target: WA State Governor Jay Inslee
Goal: Commend Governor Inslee for taking executive action to reduce carbon pollution and promote clean energy
On April 29, 2014, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee signed Executive Order 14-04, which outlines a number of key initiatives aimed at reducing carbon pollution in the Pacific Northwest and growing the clean energy economy. The order includes a series of next steps, built upon earlier studies and workgroups, and the creation of a Carbon Emissions Reduction Taskforce.
The report identifies seven key areas of action: reducing carbon emissions, eliminating the use of imported coal-fired electricity, promoting clean transportation, developing new renewable energy technologies, improving the energy efficiency of public and private buildings, setting goals for the improvement of state government operations, and updating the state’s greenhouse gas emission limits.
The taskforce includes leaders from state and local governments, nonprofits, labor representatives, and industry. Its goal is to provide recommendations on the design and implementation of a market-based carbon pricing program.
These goals will make Washington a global leader in the fight against catastrophic global climate change, and set an example that other governments can follow. They are built out of observation and experience and grounded in the latest science and technology. Thank Governor Inslee for stepping up the game and committing to real solutions for people and the planet.
Dear Governor Inslee,
Global climate disruption has the potential to threaten our economy, our society, and even life as we know it on this planet. It has already negatively impacted freshwater supplies, coastal ecosystems, and forests and farms all across the United States and the world.
Your executive order on climate change is a great first step in the fight to limit the damage from carbon pollution. These initiatives will reduce carbon emissions while stimulating the economy and adding green collar jobs to Washington state. They will also set an example for other governments in our region and in the world.
Thank you for continuing the West Coast’s legacy as a global leader in climate solutions.
