Praise App that Keeps Activists Safe

Samsung Phone

Target: Amnesty International

Goal: Praise Amnesty International for developing the Panic Button App

Amnesty International has developed an app that provides a safety net for human rights activists. The app is for Android phones and alerts other activists in the area if there is danger nearby. Defending human rights has become treacherous in certain countries and the organization is trying to keep human beings safe. Amnesty International should be praised for their work on this life saving app.

Panic Button is a project developed by Amnesty International with a partnership between Frontline Defenders, illab, and the engine room. Human rights activists in oppressive countries are routinely abducted, tortured, and killed. The dangers are magnified in protests and demonstrations, where police or security forces can open fire on civilians. The app is meant to protect activists who are trying to express their rights and opinions. Currently the app is in the beta phase and Amnesty International needs testers to ensure that the app works.

With some governments monitoring what activists are doing through their phones, Amnesty intends to fight back with this app. The Panic Button has a screen disguise feature and requires a pin to be entered to access the application. The alarm is triggered by rapidly pressing the power button, which then sends SMS messages to three pre-entered contacts. If the GPS function is enabled, the message also includes a map of the user’s location. Amnesty International is currently working with activists in 16 countries on how to use this innovative tool.

Defending human rights can be a dangerous and life threatening fight. Civilians are often harmed or even killed when they protest or demonstrate, whether it be peacefully or violently. The Panic Button can help civilians evacuate threatened areas, or create a security plan. Sign this petition and commend Amnesty International for this app. Hopefully it will help save the lives of activists in the future.

Dear Amnesty International,

I am writing this letter to thank you for the creation of the Panic Button app. This new and innovative tool will no doubt help save the lives of activists in conflict ridden countries, and help promote awareness of human rights.

I understand that many activists suffer for this fight. Many are abducted, injured, tortured, and even killed. These people tend to be civilians who have suffered under the hands of government or other oppressive forces and are trying to speak out. I do not think it is fair for the government forces to suppress these people, and I hope this app will help pave the road for human rights in all countries.
