Target: President Artur Mas
Goal: Thank the government of Catalonia for banning the use of rubber bullets
The Catalonia region in Spain has passed a ban on the use of rubber bullets by its police force. Numerous peaceful demonstrators have been seriously injured by these bullets, including the loss of an eye. Local activists started the movement against rubber bullets after the Spanish government failed to enact a similar rule. The government of Catalonia should be commended for its decision to ban the use of rubber bullets.
The United Nations and the European parliament have both come out in support of banning the use of rubber bullets. Rubber bullets are routinely used to quell demonstrations across Europe and in the United States. The problem has been significantly worse in Spain due to the large number of demonstrations against high unemployment in the country. Catalonia also has one of the highest concentrations of police officers per citizens at a rate of 5.05 per 1,000.
The weapon is difficult to control and can be lethal if fired from close range. Though rubber bullets have been banned, there is another weapon that is gaining popularity among security forces. It is a foam-based bullet that has caused two people to lose an eye in France. While the government should be commended for its decision, it must not immediately switch to a weapon that will cause similar damage. Sign this petition to thank the government for its decision to ban rubber bullets.
Dear President Mas,
Your government’s recent decision to ban the use of rubber bullets should be celebrated. The horrific injuries that can be caused by these weapons are far worse than the damage caused by protestors against your economic policies. If fired from close range, rubber bullets can cause the loss of an eye or even death.
I ask that you do not move to utilize foam-based weapons, which have caused injuries similar to those of rubber bullets. By using these weapons, your government will be in a similar situation as you were when you were persuaded to halt the use of rubber bullets. I thank you for your decision to ban the use of these weapons against your citizens.
