End Ban on Peaceful Protest Movement

Target: President of Egypt Adly Mansour

Goal: Release members of a peaceful protest group from prison after they were wrongfully accused of espionage

A recent ruling by an Egyptian court has banned the 6 April Movement, a peaceful activist group that formed in 2008. This is a violation of the right to freedom of association, assembly and expression. The court ruled to shut down the group following a suit that claimed the 6 April Movement was engaged in espionage. Banning this form of dissent, however, will not prevent it from occurring, and will hopefully inspire others to form similar movements against government overreach and abuse. The 6 April Movement was a key figure behind the protests that removed Hosni Mubarak from the presidency.

The government and media funded by the government that frequently accused the movement of spying and assisting foreign powers in hurting the Egyptian government. The group has requested multiple times for the general prosecutor of Egypt to investigate claims of espionage made against it. The government has responded by passing laws that allow the government to ban protests and sets heavy penalties for those who organize protests.

Multiple founders of the 6 April Movement have been imprisoned for lengthy sentences. The group has urged members to continue to protest, but there is little hope of that in the face of government pressure. The government must protect the right of assembly and ensure the freedom of expression in Egypt. Sign this petition to call for the government to repeal laws that infringe on the human rights of Egyptians.

Dear President Mansour,

The recent ban on activity by the 6 April Movement is a violation of basic human rights guaranteed under international human rights laws. The right to freedom of expression, association and assembly are all guaranteed in the Egyptian constitution. I ask that you immediately take steps to ensure these basic freedoms for all Egyptians.

By sentencing peaceful protestors to lengthy prison sentences, your government is signaling to the international community that Egypt is not interested in human rights protection. I ask that all members of the 6 April Movement be removed from prison immediately and unconditionally.
