Target: George Clooney, Celebrity Spokesman for Nespresso
Goal: Ask George Clooney to sever his partnership with environmentally irresponsible coffee company, Nespresso
If you put George Clooney’s face on pretty much any product, it’ll sell. Clooney has become the celebrity spokesman for pod coffee giant, Nespresso, whose products pose serious environmental concerns. In the pod coffee market, Nespresso’s business has grown by nearly 1,000 percent in the past five years. People in America and in developed countries around the world drink more pod coffee than ever before, and the trend is only expected to grow in the decade ahead. These coffee pods are non-recyclable and dramatically contribute to landfill waste.
”George Clooney has almost single-handedly launched an entire new waste stream globally as a result of fronting the Nespresso adverts,” said Jon Dee, who leads the environmental group DoSomething and is the founder of National Recycling Week, Planet Ark, and National Tree Day in Australia. ”It shows the Clooney effect has undoubtedly been enormous in this. But George Clooney – for a guy who is so switched on to civil rights and other issues – to lead the charge in causing such environmental damage and waste and other issues is really disappointing.”
Similar to bottle water, coffee pods are environmentally wasteful and unnecessarily costly for consumers. Although Nespresso has explored recycling programs for used pods, these efforts do not go far enough to impact the problem. Sign the below petition to urge George Clooney to sever his partnership with Nespresso over environmental sustainability concerns.
Dear Mr. Clooney,
Your partnership with and promotion of Nespresso products has brought the pod coffee company great profit. Although people buy pod coffee products for the convenience, your prominent image has undoubtedly influenced consumers in a major way. Over the years, you have been an outspoken advocate for environmental sustainability and human rights. Please consider the impact that your involvement with Nespresso is having on the environment as well as your reputation.
Around the world, we are seeing dramatic shifts in consumer behavior. Similar to bottle water, coffee pods are environmentally wasteful and unnecessarily costly for consumers. Coffee pods are non-recyclable and dramatically contribute to landfill waste. Please be part of the solution, not part of the problem. I am urging you to sever your business partnership with Nespresso to take a stand against non-recyclable consumer waste. With your help, we can influence pod coffee makers to make their products environmentally sustainable.
