Target: President of Peru Ollanta Humala
Goal: Demand that oil company clean up decades of contamination as a result of spilled oil
Last year, the government of Peru declared a state of emergency in part of the northern Amazon rainforest where one of country’s largest oil fields is located. The indigenous people living near the oilfield have been complaining about the pollution from the oilfield for decades. Despite the fact that unacceptable levels of lead and cadmium have been registered in the blood of children near the spill, the Argentinian company that runs the oilfield, Pluspetrol, has failed to clean up the contaminated area. Please stand with these indigenous people to demand that Pluspetrol cleans up the oil-contaminated area immediately.
A large number of indigenous people near the oil field have staged a protest. Output from the oilfield has fallen by 70 percent since protesters began the occupation of its facilities. The protestors have taken control of key transportation routes and oil tanks in the area, causing a drop in production of about 11,000 barrels a day.
Carlos Sandi, a leader of the protest, says that his people have been “silently poisoned” because Pluspetrol has refused to comply with a 2006 agreement to clean up pollution that has been accumulating for 40 years. According to Sandi, almost 80 percent of the indigenous population is sick because of lead and cadmium in their food and water form the oil contamination.
Although it is clear that this oil spill is causing serious environmental and health concerns for the indigenous people of the Amazon, the Argentinian company Pluspetrol has refused to clean up the mess. The Peru government has clearly stated that Pluspetrol is responsible for the cleanup, however, it has failed to force Pluspetrol to adhere to the terms of the cleanup. Please sign this petition to demand that Pluspetrol clean up its mess.
Dear President Humala,
As you know, your government has declared a state of emergency in part of the northern Amazon rainforest where one of the country’s largest oil fields is located. The people living near the oilfield have been complaining about the pollution from the oilfield for decades, and unacceptable levels of lead and cadmium have been measured in the blood of their children.
Despite the clear dangers posed by the spill, Pluspetrol has failed to clean up the contaminated area. It is time for your government to take decisive action and force the company to take responsibility for cleaning up its spill. Please protect the safety of your citizens and the environment by demanding that Pluspetrol cleans up this oil-contaminated area immediately.
