Stop Childhood Marriage

Yemni Doctor

Target: Prime Minister Mohammad Basindawa

Goal: Approve passage of minimum age requirement law for marriage

In the Yemen parliament, there is a Child Rights law that requirex 18 to be the minimum age requirement for marriage, and if it is passed, it will stop child marriage in the country. Currently, the legislation is up for review by the prime minister and his cabinet. Sign this petition and urge the president to approve its passage so children are not wed at an early age.

Thousands of Yemni girls are vulnerable to being married off at a young age. It’s estimated that 50% of young girls are married before the age of 18 – often to much older men – and 15% are married before they are 14. These girls are at risk of dropping out of school, dying or risking other complications from childbirth, and face a higher risk of sexual and physical abuse than women who are older than 18. Unfortunately, Yemen is the only nation in the region that does not have a minimum age requirement for marriage.

The draft law requires both men and women to verify their ages. If a marriage contract is drawn up when one party knows that the other is under the age of 18, the party could face up to two months or one year in prison, and a fine up to $1,860. Any witnesses or other signatories who know that one party is underage will also be punished. Included in the draft law is the ban of female genital mutilation, prohibits the use of child soldiers, and child laborers.

The country desperately needs these laws and they’ve been under construction for several years. Sign this bill to protect the Yemeni children from abuse and neglect.

Dear Prime Minster Mohammad Basindawa,

Currently there is a piece of legislation that I am urging you to pass immediately. It is the Child Rights bill, which will implement vast protections for the children in your country. It will protect young girls from being married off before they are 18, and issue punishments for those who try to write up a marriage contract knowing that one party violates this law. It will also prohibit hiring child soldiers or laborers.

Yemen is the only nation in your region that does not have a minimum age requirement for their marriages. These laws are essential to protecting your children from abuse and neglect. The Child Rights bill has been under construction for years; please ensure that it is finally made into law.
