Target: Interim President Adly Mansour
Goal: Conduct fair trials and squash unfair convictions
Despite a new government springing up in Egypt, human rights are grossly neglected in the country. From one Egyptian court, 37 death sentences have been confirmed, 491 life imprisonment for another case, and 683 individuals could be sentenced to death in another. These mass trials do not acknowledge basic human rights, and denies all individuals the right to a fair and transparent trial. Egypt must uphold human rights by implementing fair trials and transparent investigations.
All of these convictions must be squashed and retrials issued immediately. This is not the first time Egypt has announced such a heinous sentence, and not all defendants were even present in court to hear the sentence.
All 528 defendants were charged in connection of attacking a police station in August 2013 and belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood. During the trial, the judge do not even review the evidence or allow the defense to cross examine their witness. Such massive trials are against international standards for a fair trial, and are no doubt rigged to punish supporters of the ousted President Morsi.
The new Egyptian government shouldn’t be punishing their citizens unless there is evidence implicating them in a violent crime. Humans are entitled to their opinion and to a fair trial, which the Egyptian government is denying by following this sentence. Sign this petition to squash these convictions, and improve the justice system in Egypt.
Dear President Adly Mansour,
I am beseeching you to drop the recent death penalties and life sentences the Egyptian court gave to 528 defendants. Not only were some of these defendants not present for their trial, but this trial was done en mass. The judge did not review the evidence that was presented, nor was a cross examination done. This violates a human’s right to a fair trial, and I demand you to stop these convictions and issue a retrial.
I also demand that all of Egypt start supporting and conducting fair trials for all of their citizens. I realize the previous president sparked outrage for many Egyptians, but that does not condone further discrimination or suffering. All defendants deserve a fair and transparent trial, which is the government’s responsibility to provide. As a new government, I deeply hope you will commit to human rights and a fair justice system.
