Target: Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy
Goal: Encourage the EPA to support clean energy by increasing funding for biogas research and development programs
Oil and gas are the lifeblood of our society. We rely on it to fuel our cars, heat our homes and bring our food to the local grocery store. There are two problems with this current system: the first is that oil is not a renewable resource and we will eventually run out; the second is that burning gasoline and oil is detrimental to the environment and to our own health. Innovations in clean energy have begun to change that, and to continue that path toward change we are going to need help.
Biogas is a combination of gasses, most commonly methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide, which can be burned with oxygen to create a clean burning fuel for power plants and cars. It is harvested from the breakdown of organic wastes. Currently, there are over 3,000 landfills in the United States alone, holding more than 250 million tons of waste. At least 2/3 of that could be converted into biogas. The average American adult generates 4.3 pounds of waste per day. Multiply that by the current United States population, which is 317 million. That’s nearly 700,000 pounds of waste every day, more than half of which is biodegradable waste that could be converted into biogas.
We have the perfect opportunity now to get in on the ground floor, so to speak, and start funding biogas research. Not only will it help to slowly eliminate our reliance on landfills, but it is the first step in moving us as a species toward an era of clean-burning energy that will help both us and the planet we live on. This is an enormous opportunity. Please sign the petition below to support increased funding for research on and implementation of biogas technology.
Dear EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy,
Biogas is the wave of the future and we need your help to make it a reality. As administrator of the EPA, you were tasked with devising ways to protect and nurture the environment. What better way to accomplish that than by potentially eliminating 2/3 of the waste that makes its way into landfills each year. We ask that you increase funding to nationwide biogas research and development programs to help support clean energy and create a more sustainable future. Not only can we dramatically reduce the 127,000 tons of waste going into landfills each year, we can lower our dependence on oil and gasoline, dramatically reducing our overall carbon footprint.
This is the next step to the creation of a truly clean industry, and we cannot get there without your help. Increase funding now for biogas research and implementation.
