Target: Thailand Minister of Justice Pracha Promnok

Goal: Demand an impartial investigation into the murder of a prominent activist and poet

The government of Thailand must immediately and impartially investigate the murder of poet-activist Kamol Duangphasuk. Duangphasuk, who is widely known by his pen name Mai Nueng Kor Kunthee, has been writing poetry since the 1980s. Duangphasuk is also a Red Shirt political activist and opposes Thailand’s laws that ban any criticism of the monarchy. Duangphasuk was shot and killed in his car in late-April by an unidentified man on a motorbike. The activist was struck twice in the chest and died in a local hospital. The government should condemn his death and bring his killer to justice in order to prevent future killings.

Duangphasuk began his work as a political activist during the 2006 military coup. He took part in rallies organized by the United Front for Democracy (UDD), otherwise known as “Red Shirts.” Duangphasuk frequently referred to himself as a “Red Shirts poet.” He also helped organize UDD protests, including weekly protests outside of the Bangkok criminal court to call for the release of political prisoners and to discuss the plight of critics of the monarchy.

The king of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, has stated that he is not above criticism. The President has claimed that criticism of his wrongdoings will improve his rule. However, the alleged actions of his security forces and others against critics of his rule show otherwise. Duangphasuk’s murder will discourage others from speaking out against the monarchy. The Thailand government must do more to protect its critics and repeal laws that make criticizing the monarchy essentially illegal. Sign this petition to demand that the government of Thailand conduct an investigation into Kamol Duangphasuk’s murder and help prevent these disgraceful cold-blood killings.

Dear Minister Promnok,

The recent murder of well-known activist and poet Kamol Duangphasuk is a disgrace. Thailand’s government must do all that it can to bring Duangphasuk’s killer to justice and to help prevent additional deaths of those who criticize the monarchy. I employ you to change the laws that make criticizing the monarchy illegal. Your king has stated that he is not above criticism, however, the alleged actions of those around him show that statement to be untrue.

By allowing for open discussion and criticism, Thailand will improve socially, economically, and politically. The international community is watching, hoping that you make changes to your code of laws to improve the freedoms of your country’s citizens. Currently, the state of human rights in Thailand is quite worrisome. Please do all you can to improve this situation by bringing Duangphasuk’s killer to justice and promoting free speech laws in Thailand.
