Target: Mayor of Latta, South Carolina, Earl Bullard
Goal: Reinstate Police Chief Crystal Moore, whose firing has been linked to homophobia
Recently, Mayor Earl Bullard of Latta, South Carolina fired the town’s police chief, Crystal Moore, a twenty year veteran of the force. Moore was relieved of her duties and handed a list of reprimands by the newly-elected mayor, and her termination is linked to her sexual orientation. Members of the town’s city council have thrown their support behind Moore and are condemning Bullard’s unilateral decision as an act of retribution and homophobia. Urge Mayor Bullard to immediately reinstate the former police chief and send a strong message that homophobia will not be tolerated.
Former Police Chief Moore is openly gay and the city’s first female to hold the position. In early 2014, she launched an investigation into whether the town’s parks and recreation director, Vontray Sellers, was improperly using a city vehicle. According to a local news outlet, Sellers was caught operating the vehicle while his license was suspended. Moore alleged that Mayor Bullard failed to conduct a proper background check on Sellers. In an apparent act of retribution, before firing Moore, Bullard issued seven reprimands against her, the first she has ever received in more than twenty years on the force.
According to City Councilman Jared Taylor, Mayor Bullard acted based on homophobia. He recently provided a local news affiliate with an audio recording of a phone call between himself and Bullard in which the mayor makes several derogatory comments about gays. Councilwoman Lutherine Williams recently appeared before a crowd gathered outside of city hall in support of Moore, demanding an explanation, but Mayor Bullard refused to discuss Moore’s firing at that evening’s town hall meeting. Another rally is planned to further support Moore.
Let Mayor Bullard know that you do not agree with his decision to fire the town’s police chief based on homophobia and retribution. Demand that he reinstate Moore immediately and offer a public apology.
Dear Mayor Bullard,
I have recently learned that you fired Police Chief Crystal Moore and I am writing to urge you to reconsider your decision. Former Chief Moore has served the community for two decades and she deserves better.
I am particularly troubled by your comments regarding gay people and I believe that homophobia played a role in your decision to fire Moore. This type of bigotry is simply unacceptable in 2014.
I urge you to immediately reinstate Moore as police chief and offer her a public apology. Discrimination based simply on sexual orientation will not be tolerated in today’s society.
