Target: CEO Tim Cook
Goal: Applaud Apple for using renewable energy to power their facilities
Recently, a video narrated by the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, announced that 94% of the company’s corporate facilities and 100% of its data centers are now powered by renewable energy. After being criticized for using fossil fuels to power their facilities, this change is worth applauding.
Apple believes that climate change is a real problem and the company is addressing their carbon footprint by using solar panels to power their corporate buildings. Lisa Jackson, who was the former administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Apple’s vice-president for environment initiative, stated, “We feel the responsibility to consider everything we do in order to reduce our impact on the environment. This means using greener materials and constantly inventing new ways to conserve precious resources.” Greenpeace has criticized Apple for using mainly fossil fuels to power their facilities, but recently commended the company for their switch to renewable energy. This mix of energy now makes Apple rank higher than other technology giants like Amazon.
Apple stated that their carbon footprint was 33.8 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2013. It totals to about 5% of the United Kingdom’s annual carbon emissions of that year. Three quarters of those emissions came from the company’s manufacturing facilities. Apple is now building their new home in Cupertino, California, whose new building will use 30% less energy than the original, and be home to 7,000 trees. The company’s retail stores will also take Apple products for recycling for free, when previously customers had to buy a new product to replace the old one.
Apple has come under scrutiny lately, not just for environmental factors, but for working conditions as well. The company intends to address both issues immediately. Sign this petition and applaud Apple for the change to renewable energy.
Dear CEO Tim Cook,
I am writing this letter to applaud your company’s decision to switch to renewable energy. I am grateful to know that a powerhouse company such as yours will be reducing your carbon footprint on this planet. The mere fact that your company acknowledges that climate change exists and are willing to reverse its effects tells me that you are committed to solving this problem.
Unfortunately, most greenhouse emissions come from companies, not the average citizen. Some of our politicians are not convinced that this is happening, so it is up to companies to change their policies. Please continue to fight for our planet and keep supporting renewable energy.
