Target: United States Congress
Goal: Don’t block future federal and state mandates on GMO labeling
Representative Mike Pompeo has introduced a food industry-backed bill to establish a voluntary federal labeling standard for food containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. The deceitfully named, “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act” specifically forbids federal and state governments from requiring the labeling of GMO ingredients. It also allows food manufacturers to use the word “natural” on products that contain GMOs. The provisions of this bill completely undermine the widespread concern for the public’s safety while catering only to food manufacturers. Many activism groups have been pushing for labeling laws, and this bill will completely crush any progress for this issue.
Genetically modified organisms have never been proven safe for long-term human consumption, but they exist in about 80% of all processed foods. Many of the studies that claim GMOs are safe are linked in some way to the food industry. There is a major conflict of interest when these corporations are testing their own products because it is likely that the attempt to maximize profits will supersede concern for public safety.
Mandatory labeling requirements are necessary to educate consumers about the presence of GMOs and allow them to make informed decisions about the food they eat. Demand that lawmakers protect consumers, rather than catering to the food industry. By signing this petition, you will help urge the United States Congress to reject this bill that prohibits any future federal and state laws that require mandatory GMO labeling.
Dear United States Congress Members,
I am writing this letter to urge you to reject H.R. 4432, the recently proposed addition to the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. This bill specifically prohibits federal and state governments from setting mandatory genetically modified organism labeling requirements. Mandatory labeling requirements are necessary in order for consumers to make informed decisions about the food they eat.
The bill also allows food manufacturers to use the word “natural” on their products. Seeing as most people associate natural products with being safe, this language can be very confusing for the average consumer.
Many of the studies that claim that GMOs are safe are biased because they are orchestrated by the food industry. Despite the concern with their safety, GMOs exist in about 80% of all processed foods. Without labeling requirements, most Americans will continue to eat GMOs simply because they are not aware that they exist in their food. Studies have shown that nearly 90% of Americans are in favor of labeling foods that contain genetically modified organisms. It is necessary to test the effects of long-term human consumption of GMOs before forcing them into the food supply without the consent and knowledge of consumers.
Please listen to the public, not the corporations who are more concerned in maximizing profits than consumer safety. I am strongly urging you to protect consumers by rejecting this new bill that disallows federal and state mandatory GMO labeling laws.
