Target: Co-CEO of Whole Foods Market, John Mackey
Goal: Encourage the education and protection of the world’s honeybees
Earth month is a time for celebrating all that the earth has to offer, as well as protecting all that is vulnerable. Honeybees have faced many hardships throughout the years and are now in a dire situation. With colony collapse disorder (CCD) plaguing millions of bee colonies, we must work together to discover what is causing bee disappearance and work to combat it. This type of undertaking is much easier with a corporation involved. Whole Foods Market has started a honeybee-saving initiative for earth month and is causing a buzz in communities where it exists.
Whole Foods Market has combined marketing and the artwork of its team members to bring awareness to CCD and save the remaining bee colonies. The corporation empowers and educates its customers about bee disappearances through employee-made art installments that contain literature with valuable information about the challenge bees face, and what they can do to help.
CCD is a serious problem; without honeybees the world will face a significant loss in pollinated goods, such as most of the fruits and vegetables we currently enjoy. While much more needs to be learned about the bee disappearance, scientists have strong theories in support of a link to synthetic pesticides. One thing is for sure: consumers need to be aware of this situation and need to be empowered to help.
Whole Foods Market has done an outstanding job of educating and motivating customers to help honeybees. Simple changes like planting honeybee friendly plants in yards and staying away from synthetic pesticides makes a huge difference. Applaud Whole Foods Market for leading education efforts on this issue.
Dear John Mackey,
I am writing to commend Whole Foods Market’s goal of educating the public about Colony Collapse Disorder. Honeybees are an extremely important part of our existence; without them we have little chance of resuming life as it is now. Serious declines in pollinated foods will plague the nation and synthetic pollination will take over. Losing the honeybees is a risk that cannot be taken.
Thank you for understanding the serious problem that is CCD. Because of Whole Foods Market’s initiative to help people understand the severity of the problem we are one step closer to keeping the honeybees around for many more generations. I encourage you to empower your stores to extend the honeybee awareness past earth month.
