Target: Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin
Goal: Do not pass the law forcing citizens with solar panels to pay extra fees
Recently, the Oklahoma House passed a bill charging residents extra fees if they produce their own energy with solar panels or wind turbines. Those who support the bill claim it will create a profit balance between the traditional energy grid (such as electric or gas) and these new energy sources. In reality, this is just another bill supported by the large electric and gas corporations in Oklahoma who are afraid of seeing their profits disappear. Sign this petition and urge Governor Mary Fallin not to sign this bill into law.
Those who already have wind turbines and solar panels will be overlooked, but any citizen looking to install alternative energy sources will now be charged a new monthly fee. It seems to be a somewhat hypocritical move on the government’s part. Oklahoma offers tax credit to large wind turbines built elsewhere while charging extra for the small ones built within the state. Representatives of Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co., who staunchly support the bill, state that it is a way to retain equality in the energy field. “We’re not anti-solar or anti-wind or trying to slow this down, we’re just trying to keep it fair.” Well, it is a bit hard to see the “fairness” in a small movement of residents being taxed for solar panels, as compared to the entire state’s gas and electric corporation.
Ultimately, this bill is a pretty package of words hiding a devious move. The bill and its supporters claim it is to protect the fairness and balance in the energy business within Oklahoma. In reality, it is easy to see through to their motive, which is a clear attempt to grasp onto every bit of profit they can. Sign the petition and tell Governor Fallin that taxing citizens trying to use clean energy is not the right decision.
Dear Governor Fallin,
I understand the S.B. 1456, the clean energy tax bill, will soon be crossing your desk after passing the Oklahoma House. While the bill seems to support equality and fairness of energy resources, this is not the case. Instead, it is an attempt strongly supported by the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company to discourage residents from installing their own sources of clean energy.
Residents who install solar panels or small wind turbines are helping to protect the environment and also decrease their bills each month. They are taking care of the earth and themselves, and should not be punished for these good actions. Please do not sign this bill into law.
