Target: Tim Cunningham, Director of Clowns without Borders
Goal: Praise group for providing entertainment to refugee children
It may sound cheesy, but one thing no war or destruction can take away from a child is their imagination. One group is working tirelessly to help children in war-torn lands, refugee camps, and crushing poverty to set their imaginations free in a comedic way. Clowns without Borders, a new non-profit organization, performs for children in the most dire situations world wide, bringing smiles and self-confidence as they go. Their official mission is to “share joy and laughter in zones of conflict and crisis around the world.” Emotional well being is often overlooked in the world of humanitarian aide. Bringing laughter and positivity to children can improve morale, kick-start learning and education, and reduce instances of PTSD. Clowns without Borders, and their director Tim Cunningham, deserve admiration and applause. Show them that their important work is appreciated.
Clowns without Borders was founded in 1993, but has recently expanded to include more international projects, and has received commendation from a variety of news sources in recent days. Operating on a shoestring budget, last year the group carried out twelve performance projects, eleven of them international, on just $43,000 for the year. They reached a total of 40,000 children with their zany comedy. With a strict policy of only going where they are invited and wanted, Clowns without Borders has become a favorite of even some of the strictest governments. Working within such narrow parameters to deliver art that is “without religion, without politics, without dogma” is a noble feat.
As many children can find circus clowns frightening, Clowns without Borders expands the definition of the scope of clowning in order to please a maximum number of kids. According to director Tim Cunningham, “It is not always a red nose, it is not always make-up. A clown is an eccentric character or a group of eccentric characters living in the world and trying just to function in the world that we know.”
Although this program has received accolades in recent months, in publications and online news sources such as The Huffington Post, their hilarious and beneficial work deserves additional applause. Let them know their work is appreciated today.
