Praise Library for Supporting Animal Rights

Target: Kelly Rembert, Outreach Librarian for Southfield Public Library

Goal: Thank Michigan library for educating readers about animal welfare

The Southfield Public Library just outside of Detroit, Michigan is using the national bestseller Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian to promote animal welfare throughout Oakland County. Their community-wide reading program has sought the help of local animal rescue groups to inform the public about the importance of these organizations. For their kindness and innovation, Southfield Public Library deserves our gratitude.

Before You Know Kindness deals with the accidental shooting of an animal rights activist and the struggle as he and his family try to come to terms with what has happened and the media circus that ensues. “We try to find something every year that has a broad appeal. This is a great book,” said Southfield Public Library outreach librarian Kelly Rembert. “It deals with the treatment of animals, so we thought we’d play off the theme and present an animal rescue program.” Representatives from the Michigan Humane Society and Horses’ Haven will give short presentations that include information on animal welfare, before and after photos of rescued animals, and stories of their efforts on behalf of animals in Michigan. Chris Bohjalian will also give a talk. The program is free to the public and no registration is required.

Outside of her work with the library, Rembert has been an active animal rights supporter. “I volunteered there for 10 years. I don’t have a horse, but I grew up in a rural area and grew up riding horses. I loved going out there because it brought me back to my roots,” she said of Horses’ Haven, where horses are rehabilitated and found new homes. “Every animal is given individualized attention based on what they need. They get individual feed and oftentimes it has their medicine in it, or their food is softened because they might have bad teeth.”

Please take a moment to sign the petition below to thank Kelly Rembert and the Southfield Public Library for educating the public about animal welfare.

Dear Kathy Rembert,

Using Chris Bohjalian’s book Before You Know Kindness as a vehicle, The Southfield Public Library will be hosting an outreach event dedicated to educating people about animal welfare as part of your community-wide reading program. The Michigan Humane Society and Horses’ Haven will both be giving presentations and the author, himself, will make an appearance.

Thank you so much for your work to help educate the public about animal rescues and welfare. This is an incredible event that will merge literacy and activism as well as make information on a crucial topic available to everyone.
