Target: Harvard University President Drew Faust
Goal: Stop investing in fossil fuel companies
Harvard University President Drew Faust recently signed guidelines committing to responsible investment, but failed to commit to selling the university’s current shareholdings in fossil fuel companies. These guidelines created by the United Nations aim to help the university take environmental and social factors into account when investing in stocks in order to support renewable energy and battle climate change.
Most experts agree that climate change is mainly caused by our long history of burning fossil fuels and swift efforts must be made to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions before more irreversible damage is caused. A recent study shows that fossil fuel companies are among the groups that fund climate change denial efforts. The act of divestment aims to change this type of corporate behavior. The United Nations and World Bank have already divested in fossil fuel companies as a means of battling climate change. If Harvard withdraws its large monetary influence, other organizations may follow suit and these oil and coal companies may be forced to end their climate change denial efforts.
As an academic institution, it is important that Harvard supports research and education in all aspects. It is contradictory to invest in companies that continuously provide funding to government officials so they will continue to deny climate change. By signing this petition, you will help urge Harvard University to stop investing in fossil fuel companies.
Dear Drew Faust,
Your commitment to follow the United Nation’s guidelines of responsible investment is an important step towards battling climate change. I am writing this letter to urge you to take an even greater stride by pledging to sell the university’s current shareholdings in fossil fuels. The United Nations and World Bank have already supported divestment as a means of battling climate change. It is important that the university divests its large monetary contribution to fossil fuel companies in hopes of reversing their climate change denial efforts and work towards significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
As an academic institution that has committed to finding a solution for climate change, it is contradictory to invest in an industry that is rapidly burning fossil fuels and facilitating anti-climate change propaganda. Please fully stand by your commitment and stop investing in the corporations who are funding lawmakers to deny climate change. I am urging Harvard University to stop investing in fossil fuel companies.
