Denounce Japan for Whale Slaughter

Whaling in Faroe island

Target: Minister of Agriculture Yoshimasa Hayashi

Goal: Denounce Japan’s decision to continue whaling off the coast of Antarctica

Japan recently agreed to stop whaling in Antarctica, but then immediately reversed its position and decided to resume its whale slaughter. Commercial whaling has been banned by the International Whaling Commission, but certain loopholes can be found in the law. For instance, if a nation claims the whaling was done for research purposes, they are allowed to continue the slaughter. A lawsuit brought by Australia claimed that Japan was not killing whales for research purposes, but for the meat. Australia won the lawsuit and Japan claimed it would stop whaling… but then it quickly reversed course.

Very little people actually eat whale meat in Japan, and political analysts believe the move to continue whaling was done by political conservatives who believe in continuing the tradition of eating whale meat. Many Japanese politicians think that their way of life is being dominated by foreigners, and one such politician joked about giving President Obama whale meat the next time he visited the country.

With the recent claims made by Japanese politicians, it is highly unlikely that whaling will be done solely for research purposes. Before the court made its ruling, most of the whale meat Japan acquired was sent to commercial markets. Sign this petition and denounce the country for going back on their word and continuing the slaughter.

Dear Minister of Agriculture Yoshimasa Hayashi,

I am writing to express my outrage towards your country’s decision to continue whaling off of Antarctica. Japan recently stated that they would discontinue whaling in that region, and not even a month after making this statement, you’ve gone back on your word.

I realize that your country is redesigning the whaling program to make it more research based, but with politicians claiming to uphold whaling traditions, I find this reason to be a cover up. I do not believe your continued slaughter for whales is for research purposes. I believe your country is doing so because it wants to uphold a tradition, which is harming the whale population. I urge you to stop whaling completely.

  6. And why is there an add on this page urging us to visit Japan????? I would rather not visit Japan until they stop such archaic traditions. I find this add on this particular page offensive. Webmaster or moderator please remove it? Thank you.

  7. I’ve decided Japan is a warped place run by cruel inhumane avaricious humans from the dark ages. The cruelty they have inflicted on human kind and animal kind over time is despicable and totally heinous beyond belief. And for what? Nothing good has come from any of their antics. They are terrorists of a kind that are dangerous for the planet and all living things. Just ask any whale or dolphin and they will tell you of the terror they face before they are murdered an d drained of their life’s blood. The Japanese are guilty of being under the mistaken belief that the world is hooked on their technology from toasters to cars but we got along without their products before and if push came to shove could do it again. And so they should not think they can win this battle to go on being environmental vandals. Sooner or later they must realise they are walking on a lonely road, leading to nowhere good. Murdering innocent beings and environmental indifference is a travesty.

Attention all whalers, do the only honorable thing and pull out your swords and fall on them.

  9. Carol Hulbert says:

Japan has always claimed “Research” but no valid research has ever been documented, to my knowledge. They just murder these beautiful, innocent creatures by the hundreds, year after year….the Sea Shepherds have followed them from ocean to ocean, trying to stop their murder sprees, putting themselves in danger many times to try and save these precious creatures. It’s high time we step up and help them, BAN ALL PRODUCTS FROM JAPAN!! Be AWARE of what you’re buying, where the product is made is always written somewhere, we have to stop this travesty to the whales, the earth and ultimately OURSELVES!
