Target: President Oleksandr Turchynov
Goal: Stop pro-Russian forces from distributing anti-Semitic literature in Ukraine
Leaflets currently being distributed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk warn the Jewish population to register with the pro-Russian government that has recently claimed power. The leaflets have been deemed authentic by the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. The leaflets also state that if members of the Jewish community there do not register themselves and their property, they will face deportation or loss of citizenship. The Ukrainian government must immediately step up efforts to regain control of the area and protect their citizens from intimidation.
The flyer states that, ‘All citizens of Jewish nationality over age of 16, living on territories of Donetsk People’s Republic, have to register with DPR commissioner.’ The registration also declares that registration costs $50. Armed and masked men handed out fliers during Passover in front of the main synagogue in Donetsk.
Ukraine has a large Jewish population that is a vital part of political life. The international community has been swift to label the fliers as a deplorable act. It is absurd that such an act could be taking place in the 21st century, but now that it has, something must be done to quell the aggression of these pro-Russian forces. The government in Ukraine must act quickly to quell these emotions. Sign this petition to demand an end to blatant anti-Semitism in eastern Ukraine.
Dear President Oleksandr Turchynov,
The recent appearance of anti-Semitic flyers in Eastern Ukraine is a disturbing development. Your government must do all it can to halt this progression. Besides taking back control of the eastern part of Ukraine for your country’s sake, protecting the human rights of religious groups in Ukraine is equally important.
I ask that you also immediately open discussions with the pro-Russian groups that are seizing buildings in the east to ensure that they are also doing what they can to expel these radical elements. Allowing this to continue will deteriorate the stability of the east even further. I urge you to take action.
