Stop Hateful Homosexuality Trial

Rainbow Flag

Target: President Yoweri Museveni

Goal: Stop trial of men for homosexuality charges

Uganda’s anti-gay law has caused discrimination, hate crime, and suffering for men and women in the country. Those who are gay, or even associate with homosexual people, can be prosecuted under the nation’s new law against homosexuality. Currently two men are on trial for the first time since the creation of the law. These charges are inhumane and must be dropped immediately.

Prosecutors stated that they had enough evidence to convict Kim Mukisa and Jackson Mukasa of homosexuality. Both men deny that they are homosexual when they appeared in court in early 2014. Since then, both have spent their time in prison. Mukisa is 24-year-old businessman who was charged with “having sexual knowledge of a person against the order of the nature. Mukasa was charged with permitting a person to have sexual knowledge of him against the order of nature.

Both men are the first to stand trial for homosexuality. Previous cases have collapses before they reached the court, or defendants paid their high fines to avoid prison time.

President Yoweri Museveni signed the anti-gay law in February of 2014, stating that science doesn’t support homosexuality and therefore homosexual people should be punished. First time offenders of the law can spend life imprisonment for acts of “aggravated homosexuality.” If Mukisa and Mukasa are prosecuted for this crime, both will spend life in prison.

This inhumane piece of legislation has brought suffering to the LGBT community in Uganda. Donors to Uganda have since stopped giving their support, and others have diverted their efforts to human rights. It is apparent that many people do not agree with Uganda’s law. Sign this petition and demand the president to stop the trial and drop all charges on these men.

Dear President Yoweri Museveni,

In February 2014, you signed the anti-gay bill into law, permitting your citizens to discriminate and harm homosexuals. I find this piece of legislation to be completely inhumane and allows the abuse of innocent people.

I am writing to urge you to stop the trial of Kim Mukisa and Jackson Mukasa. Both of these men are charged with homosexuality. It is not right to punish someone for life because of their sexual orientation. Certainly your nation’s efforts could be diverted to more serious issues, like murder, homicide or rape? This legislation is ridiculous and can be easily abused by corrupt officials. Stop the trial and drop all charges on these men.

  2. As long as the consent of age (18) between both parties, it should not matter if the person they are having sex with is the same gender as long as both parties consent!!!
Homosexuality should not be discriminated against! I am heterosexual but I don’t condone homosexuality.

    • Yasmin, I believe the word you meant to use was condemn. I agree with you. If both are consenting adults, it’s nobody’s business but their own.
