Target: President Goodluck Jonathan
Goal: Support education for all children despite terrorist attacks
In Nigeria, as the conflict between Muslims and Christians continues to rage, a terrorist group called Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted all girls schools in an attempt to stop them from receiving an education. The terrorist group’s name roughly translates to “western education is a sin” and they have recently kidnapped 200 Nigerian girls in the dead of night. Sign this petition and ensure that education will still be given to children despite these attacks. All humans have a right to education and no one has the right to take that away.
It’s estimated at least 1,500 people were killed in 2014 by the Boko Haram and the violence is still continuing. They are intent on forcing an Islamic state on Nigeria but Christian resistance is preventing them from doing so. When the former leader of the group was killed in police custody, the group began targeting schools, villages, and market places. The group’s influence highly appeals to the young and impoverished, which affects 70% of the nation.
Some of their recent attacks included planting a bomb on the road, which exploded during the morning rush, ripping through buses and killing 71 people. The group also stormed a military barracks, freeing 2,000 detainees, and a battle ensued. The hospital who treated the wounded and dead stated that many of the bodies had to be placed in mass graves because their morgue couldn’t handle the amount of people who died. Boko Haram even locked girls in their dormitories and set fire to it, burning the young girls alive.
Boko Haram’s goal is to scare girls and women from receiving an education. We know that education can help the impoverished and poor, bring about medical advances, and boost self-esteem. This terrorist group has no right to take education away from these young women and girls. Sign this petition and urge the president to not give in, and ensure everyone gets the education they have a right to have.
Dear President Goodluck Jonathan,
I realize that your nation is suffering from conflict and I deeply sympathize. In just this year alone, your people have lost many lives to the terrorist group Boko Haram. I do not agree with the group’s actions or their beliefs and I am urging you not to give in to their demands.
All children, whether they are female or male, have a right to education. Education can do so much for society and for one’s self-esteem. Yes, the group will continue to use violence to terrorize and intimidate girls, but the government should be there to protect them and keep them safe. Please do not let the group have their way. Continue to support education no matter what the cost.
