Target: President of H&M, Karl-Johan Persson and Director- General of Zara, Óscar Pérez Marcote
Goal: Thank these companies for ensuring that their clothing doesn’t contain material from endangered forests
The two largest global fashion brands, Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) and Zara, just revealed their pledge to keep their rayon and viscose clothing free from threatened forest materials. They have united with Canopy, a non-profit environmental organization that is committed to protecting the world’s forests and animals, to make this happen.
In a news report, H&M openly promised to use materials that are not sourced from endangered forests before 2017 because they believe in supporting long-standing conservation goals. Canopy estimates that over sixty million trees are cut every year and made into the regularly used fabrics that fashion companies, like H&M, use for their products. The fashion company Zara has also made the same promise to protect the world’s rainforests and conserve raw materials by finding other sources for their clothing.
Materials such as rayon, viscose, and other common textiles are frequently made from the world’s most endangered forests. Most of these forests are in Asia where they are becoming vulnerable because of the high demand for raw clothing material. What they find in these forests is then made into shirts, dresses, jackets, and any other article of clothing one can imagine.
If more fashion companies join this campaign, rainforests would be abundant throughout the world. Please sign this petition to praise the companies that have put forests at the top of their priorities and encourage more companies to join the cause.
Dear Karl-Johan Persson and Óscar Pérez Marcote,
Thank you for your efforts in saving endangered forests. We understand that your companies’ livelihoods depended on these forests, but you are still making a conscious effort to switch to a more sustainable textile source. This shows that your company cares about the environment and the animals that rely on it to survive.
By joining Canopy, you are becoming companies that listen to and care about their customers and the world that we all live in. We hope that this becomes a stepping stone for other companies to join in. If more fashion companies decide to unite for the cause, the forests in Indonesia and other parts of the world will get a second chance and less animals will be threatened because of it. Your public commitments to the cause makes you the companies to watch for. Keep up the great work and we can’t wait to see more changes throughout the coming years.
