Target: Thomas E. Menighan, C.E.O. of the American Pharmacist Association
Goal: Demand that the American Pharmacist Association ban its members from participating in execution
Almost every single major medical association in America bans its members from participating in execution — except for the American Pharmacist Association. The American Board of Anesthesiology even stipulates that members will lose their medical certification if they participate in an execution. The American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, the American Board of Anesthesiology, and the American Nurses Association prohibit their members from participating in execution based on the Hippocratic oath, an oath that all doctors take that prevents them from doing harm to patients.
The agreement of all these important medical associations coupled with the known barbaric nature of execution in the United States should be enough to convince the American Pharmacist Association to bar its pharmacists from issuing drugs to executioners or participating in the executions in any way. State executions in this country are becoming more and more inhumane now that many companies based overseas have ended trade of specific drugs used in executions to the United States. These drugs are being misused to end human lives, and these companies are taking major financial hits in order to prevent these deaths. Our medical associations have a responsibility to do the same, in order to protect human life and not end it. More and more frequently, prisoners are being subjected to untested cocktails of drugs that cause horrific suffering and undue pain. Many of these prisoners, according to our national track record, are in fact innocent individuals.
State execution is a racist, classist institution that supports horrific violence and human suffering as punishment for crimes many of the victims haven’t even committed. It is a stain on our national history, and it should have ended decades ago. Please sign this petition to urge the American Pharmacist Association to follow the lead of all other major medical associations and prohibit its members from participating in state execution of any kind.
Dear Thomas E. Menighan,
For too long, the American Pharmacist Association has allowed its members to participate in the torturous practice of state execution, in direct opposition to the Hippocratic oath and the Code of Ethics for Pharmacists in which harm to patients is strictly prohibited.
Not only is state execution by lethal injection of pharmaceuticals a grave misuse of medicine intended to heal, but it has also become an insult to the medical profession with its use of untested drug cocktails that cause horrific pain and suffering.
Please follow the lead of every other major medical association and immediately institute a policy banning your members from participating in state execution.
