Target: Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of Girl Scouts of America
Goal: Demand that the Girl Scouts of America remove unhealthy ingredients from their cookies
The Girl Scouts’ cookie selling program aims to teach girls skills that are essential to leadership and success such as “goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.” However, the cookies the girls are required to sell are full of harmful ingredients like trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and colorings, and genetically modified organisms.
The negative aspects of these ingredients are endless. Trans fats are high in cholesterol and experts say most should be avoided, especially the types that are chemically processed. High fructose corn syrup has been directly linked to our national obesity epidemic. Artificial flavors and colorings have been linked to hyperactivity in children. Genetically modified crops and their pesticides threaten seed diversity, strip nutrient-rich soil, and the effects on humans are not yet known. They have already been banned by over 60 countries.
The Girl Scouts of America is an organization that says their mission is to help girls make the world a better place by building “courage, confidence, and character.” Their mission would be backed by a stronger foundation if their trademark products were free of unhealthy and harmful ingredients. By removing these ingredients and educating these young girls about the benefits of avoiding them, it may have a positive impact on an even wider population.
By signing this petition, you will be urging the CEO of the Girl Scouts of America to remove unhealthy ingredients from their cookies.
Dear Anna Maria Chávez,
I am writing with a major concern for the health of your scouts and supporters. Your organization’s mission to give young girls the tools to build the courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place is commendable. The cookies the girls are required to sell, however, are full of harmful ingredients like trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and colorings, and genetically modified organisms. There are major negative aspects of these ingredients and they should be removed from your cookies.
It is becoming a more widespread belief that these ingredients should be avoided. The overabundance of trans fats and high fructose corn syrup has been linked to our national obesity epidemic and artificial flavors and colors have been linked to hyperactivity in children. Genetically modified crops are controversial and have been banned in over 60 countries because their effects on humans are not yet known.
Please make your trademark products free of unhealthy ingredients and educate your members about the importance of avoiding these ingredients. It will have a positive impact on the scouts by providing them the knowledge that is necessary for their health and for educating others. This would be a tremendous step towards achieving your mission of making the world a better place.
