Close Oceans to Save Fish

School of Tuna

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Ban U.S. fishing boat access to international waters to save fish population

A drastic measure has been proposed to save the fish population in our oceans and it is closing off access to international waters. This plan is meant to help the fish population reproduce — something that isn’t happening with our current fishing rates. For humans to continue to consume fish like tuna, albacore, and swordfish, this plan must be put into action. Sign this petition and urge the president to support this plan to save our fish.

The reality is that humans are fishing at a rate that is unsustainable. In a few years, popular fish like tuna or martin will simply disappear because there are so few regulations against overfishing. In the last century, commercial fishing has drastically reduced the amount of fish, and what are we taking from the oceans cannot be replenished as quickly as necessary.

This conservation plan of closing off international waters was proposed in PLoS Biology by authors Crow White and Christopher Costello. The plan is to restrict access to international waters for several years, but allow fishing to happen in waters that are 200 miles off the coast. Costello stated that “by catching less fish in the short run, we’d able to catch more fish every year on a sustainable basis forever.”

Currently there is a free-for-all in international waters, but as the number of catches are decreasing every year, fishing ships can be found circling the open seas trying to find a school of fish to catch. The plan is not only beneficial to the environment, but it is cost effective for humans as well. Currently having fishing ships meander and float in the oceans is costing the industry too much money. However, if the ships were to be removed and then returned several years later, it is very likely to earn a hefty profit.

While a radical and drastic plan, this may be the only plan we have to save our fish. Our regulations are not sustaining our fish, and fish farming isn’t working either. Sign this petition and urge the president to support this plan, as it may be our last hope in saving numerous species of fish.

Dear President Obama,

I am writing to urge you to support a drastic plan to save our fish. With commercial fishing effectively wiping out most of our fish population, a plan to close the high seas is being proposed to save their numbers. I understand this plan is extremely radical, but so were our fishing efforts in the last century. In 1989, the world hauled in 90,000,000 metric tons of fish, and since then, our catches have become increasingly smaller because the fish are not there.

It should be deeply troubling that one of our precious food sources is in danger of disappearing. I hope you will consider this plan, and back it immediately. Humans have been responsible for polluting the land and the water, and I would hate to know that we were responsible for making our fish disappear.
