Target: Kanwaljit Deol, Human Rights Commission of India
Goal: Remove rape-promoting politicians from office
The Samajwadi Party is hoping to win an upcoming political election in India. In recent interviews, leaders of the party discussed a perceived problem in Indian society: how rape victims are not punished. When asked about a solution to rape, party members stated plainly that rape victims should be hung and rapists should be forgiven. It is crucial that India and other nations demand the resignation of the Samajwadi Party from positions of power.
The party’s leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav, promised that he will secure job opportunities for rapists. At a recent election rally he said, “Boys are boys. Mistakes happen sometimes,” in regards to 3 men who were convicted of 2 gangrapes. Another party leader, Naresh Agarwal, warned that rape victims should “pay attention to their clothes.” The party has faced backlash from various activists and media outlets in India, however Indian women are still in danger.
Irrational leaders like those in the Samajwadi party are a danger to the stability of India as a whole. In light of these violence-promoting statements, Indians should boycott the Samajwadi Party in the upcoming election. Other nations should help India in demanding the resignation of Samajwadi partymembers to ensure that violence against women is not legalized or condoned in the future.
Dear Kanwaljit Deol,
The first sentence on the Samajwadi Party website reads, “The Samajwadi Party believes in creating a socialist society, which works on the principle of equality and the party has a secular and democratic outlook.” However, based on recent public statements we know that this couldn’t possibly be true.
The Samajwadi Party wants rapists to be forgiven and they’ve gone out of their way to publicize it. When asked about a solution to India’s widespread rape problem, one party leader concluded that rape victims should be hung.
There is simply no justification for the irrational promotion and legalization of violence. Leaders who support rape should be considered co-cospirators of rapists and mentally incapable of leading. Using a political platform to put a demographic of people in danger should be illegal.
An apology is not nearly enough when the lives of thousands of women hang on the decision of the upcoming election. These men want to condone rape because they are not women and they will never suffer or be in danger. This is not leadership, but rather personal interest. For the sake of India, please help us in demanding the indefinite resignation of the Samajwadi party.
