Target: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron
Goal: Demand animal welfare protection laws to help pet rabbits in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, the rabbit is the third most popular pet animal, however it is also unfortunately the most neglected pet. Pet rabbits are usually kept in cages but unlike other European Union countries, the United Kingdom does not have any legal requirements regarding the size of the cages these animals are kept in.
More often than not, these pet rabbits are forced to live in cages that may be inadequate in size. The United Kingdom’s Animal Welfare Act was very un-specific in relation to the welfare of rabbits. As a result of the Act’s failure to specify the size requirements for rabbit cages, nearly sixty percent of rabbit owners in the nation are keeping their rabbits in cages that are below the size recommended by many welfare charities. Cage enclosures that are below the adequate size recommendation affect the welfare of the rabbits by hindering their behavioral opportunities. Living in a cage is already unpleasant enough; the least that these rabbits deserve are cages that are sufficient in size.
As the United Kingdom’s third most popular pet, it is important that specific protection laws regarding pet rabbits be amended. Sign this petition and demand rabbit welfare-specific legislation in the United Kingdom.
Dear Prime Minister David Cameron,
It is a fact the rabbits are the third most popular pet in the United Kingdom. They are easy to maintain since they mostly reside in cages. However, many pet rabbits are forced to live in cages that are inadequate in size.
The United Kingdom’s Animal Welfare Act fails to specify a size requirement for rabbit cages. As a result, many pet owners keep their rabbits in cage enclosures that are smaller than the size recommended by many welfare charities in the nation.
For an animal with such popularity, it is unfortunate that rabbits are also the most neglected pets. By forcing rabbits to live in cage enclosures that do not meet the size requirements recommended by welfare charities, the behavioral opportunities of these animals are being limited. In order to resolve this issue, I urge you to support passing an animal welfare law that is specific to rabbits. The rabbit welfare specific legislation is crucial regarding the welfare of these beloved pet animals.
