Condemn Retailer for Wasting One Million Jars of Peanut Butter

Target: Costco CEO, Craig Jelinek

Goal: Demand an apology from Costco for dumping one million jars of peanut butter after a corporate dispute

The food retailer Costco recently threw away 950,000 jars of peanut butter after a dispute with their peanut butter supplier Sunland Foods Inc. The peanut butter had nothing wrong with it, but the retailer refused to use it or give it away out of spite towards their supplier. This sort of behavior is unacceptable and Costco should apologize for and rectify these actions.

In 2013 when Sunland Foods was filing for bankruptcy, Costco agreed to buy the remainder of the jars of peanut butter which Sunland Foods already had made. When Costco received the jars, some were leaking peanut oil, so Costco denied the shipments. Following this incident, the peanut butter was tested and deemed safe, however, Costco refused to sell the peanut butter to another party or even donate it to a food bank. They threw away the nearly one million jars of peanut butter in a landfill, a job which cost nearly $60,000.

These actions are petty and childish. The peanut butter was safe, and as a nourishing and filling snack, peanut butter would have been an ideal item to be donated among food banks or other organizations. Instead the jars are sitting in a land fill; an immense waste of food, money, space, and production efforts. Costco should rectify these childish actions and refrain from this behavior in the future.

Please sign the petition below to ask that Costco apologize for it’s actions and take any actions to rectify their mistakes.

Dear Craig Jelinek,

Nearly one million jars of peanut butter are in a landfill due to your company’s negligent practices. The peanut butter which was supplied by Sunland Foods Inc. was refused by your company for a peanut oil leak even after being deemed safe for consumption. Rather than offering the peanut butter to food pantries or other organizations, your company threw away the entire stock in a landfill, a job which cost $60,000.

This appears to be a petty action committed out of spite due to tension between your company and Sunland Foods Inc. The decision to waste all of this peanut butter without even considering donating it was irresponsible and unethical. We ask that you apologize for these actions and rectify them any way you can.

Thisis vital to the food distribution in our country. Why should perfectly good food end up in the landfill when there are many kids going hungry in our country. I work at a good food bank 5 days a week and see the disparity. Costco.. I have been a customer of yours for years… Lets get this right for the sake of the children who suffer poverty in our county. thanks
