Target: BBC Director of Television Danny Cohen
Goal: Demand that the BBC cancel a competition show that results in a dog being cloned
Dog cloning is a dangerous procedure that often produces animals that die soon after birth. Many puppies are produced only to die in the process of creating one “perfect” clone. BBC Channel 4 is airing a competition show entitled Cloning Man’s Best Friend in which dog owners compete to win a clone of their family pet. We must demand that this cruel and unnatural program is cancelled immediately.
According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), cloning involves dangerous and painful procedures for the embryos and the surrogate mothers. As stated on the HSUS website, “The egg ‘donors’ and/or surrogate mothers are subjected to painful hormone treatments to manipulate their reproductive cycles. These animals are also subjected to invasive surgery to harvest eggs or implant embryos, and the surrogate mothers endure an additional surgery to deliver the baby.” To date, no cloned animal has lived a full lifespan and many die from complications shortly after birth.
The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) has reported that the dog cloning procedure that the winner of Cloning Man’s Best Friend receives will be headed by researcher Hwang Woo-suk, “who was previously given a two year suspended prison sentence in 2009 for embezzlement and bioethical violations.” The show is being funded by South Korean cloning company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, in an effort to increase their sales.
Cloning further devalues the lives of animals while subjecting them to torturous procedures that are against the laws of nature. We must petition for the cancellation of this disgusting show as well as urge viewers to change the channel so that precious ad dollars will be lost.
Dear Mr. Danny Cohen,
I was disturbed to learn that BBC Channel 4 is airing a program that will result in the cloning of a dog. Perhaps you were unaware that cloning is a dangerous and painful process that results in the deaths of several puppies in order to produce one “perfect” clone.
Cloning further devalues the lives of animals while subjecting them to torturous procedures that are against the laws of nature. Please cancel Cloning Man’s Best Friend immediately and show the public that the BBC prioritizes the welfare of animals rather than ratings and ad dollars.
