Target: Governor of California, Jerry Brown
Goal: Halt the deaths of mountain lions in California
Mountain lions in California are dwindling due to threats posed by humans. Humans are responsible for two of the biggest reasons why numerous Southern Californian mountain lions are dying: motor vehicle collisions and hunting. Mountain lions are also at risk because their territories are restricted by freeways and other developments built by humans.
Although there are permits to shoot and kill a mountain lion that has killed a human being, these animals are sometimes shot if their behavior is perceived as aggressive and a threat to the public safety of humans. However, their aggressive behavior may be a result of their limited territory. Along with being restricted to their territories by freeways, many mountain lions are killed on these roads each year. Vehicle collisions are the biggest cause of death for Southern Californian mountain lions. Nearly 15 of these animals have been killed on the 241 Toll Road in Southern California. The mountain lions are also being hunted by poachers who kill them illegally for their pelts.
Mountain lions could eventually cease to exist in Southern California if the rate of their deaths continues to carry on this way. To prevent the deaths of mountain lions and save these animals’s lives, sign this petition.
Dear Governor Jerry Brown,
It has come to my attention that the population of mountain lions in Southern California is dwindling. These animals are not only restricted to their territories by freeways and other developments, they are also shot and killed if they exhibit aggressive behavior that could pose a threat to public safety. I believe that it is crucial to understand that their aggressive behavior may be caused by the stress they feel from being limited to their territory. From the mountain lion’s point of view, we are the threat.
Humans are accountable for two of the biggest causes of death for Southern Californian mountain lions. Due to the many freeways, numerous mountain lions are killed by vehicle collisions. They are also being hunted illegally by poachers who intend to kill these animals for their pelts.
I hope that you realize the severity of the threats we humans pose to the mountain lions. I urge you to work towards preserving the population of mountain lions in Southern California because if things continue to carry on this way, these animals may cease to exist in California in the future.
